There's lots of news today regarding Virginia Tech.

1. The Daily Press reports that a water heater was most likely to blame in Sunday's carbon monoxide poisonings, and that "Carbon monoxide detectors were selling well after 21 students were treated at hospitals."

2. Classes resumed yesterday, with students saying they are "ready for a new start."

3. The head of the Virginia Tech shootings panel said that "it would have been awfully difficult to stop Cho," and that if he could have been, "it certainly would have had to happen before the first two hours."

4. The panel has requested a bit more time to complete its report, and now "intends to submit it to the governor next week."  The panel met yesterday for about 12 hours.

5. A victim advocacy group "has filed a complaint [against Virginia Tech], alleging the university broke federal law by not spreading word about the shootings sooner."

6. Finally, former Virginia Tech football star Michael Vick is going to jail.

As I said, lots of news from Virginia Tech.  What's that ancient Chinese curse again, "may you live in interesting times?"

Obviously plenty of bad news exists... (MikeSizemore - 8/21/2007 9:48:52 AM)
...but its still a great time to be a Hokie, and being one is a greater privilege than you could ever imagine. The media coverage of classes beginning is absolutely pathetic, and a shining example of a sensationalist media grasping at straws. To the many news organizations camped out on campus: leave my Hokies the hell alone.

I don't think anyone's questioning (Lowell - 8/21/2007 9:56:43 AM)
whether it's great to be a Hokie.  What specific "good news" stories is the media missing?  I'm curious to know.

Absolutely!  I so wish the Media would get out of Blacksburg and stop harping on everything that happens to us Hokies!  I'm so relieved to hear that the tenants of Collegiate Suites will be okay, as CO poisoning is fatal if not caught early enough.  That's news I am glad to hear.  But gah, it's time for them to go home and let us Hokies be Hokies!

And that advocacy group just got put on my you-know-what list.
