Leadership questioned
August 16, 2007Recently I read a brief letter in the Alexandria Times that claimed Virginia was No. 1 for business. The letter, written by Del. Brian Moran, claimed that Democratic leadership has made Virginia one of the most prosperous states in the country to raise a family and that Virginia was once again named the best state to do business in America.
Congratulations to Virginia.
I am confused however, with what exactly some of our elected officials have done to share in this triumph. State delegate David Englin was recently evaluated as the least effective delegate in the state with the second lowest business rating of all delegates in the 2007 Virginia FREE General Assembly incumbent evaluations. How does this translate to success for those of us in the 45th District?
Del. Englin's 2007 business rating (54 of 100) places him among the "occasional supporters of pro-business views." His effectiveness rating (36 of 100), which rates each legislator in his or her legislative objectives - without regard to the legislator's position on business issues, was the lowest of all Virginia Delegates. When given these evaluations in almost any other arena, you would most certainly view this as a failing grade.
Del. Englin is not a businessman; he does not seem to be in touch with the business community. The 45th District needs strong representation from someone who knows how to capitalize on Virginia's strength and secure our rewards. We need a leader who has experience in business and getting things done. Mark Allen has proven that to me. I have dealt with Mark in many situations, both professionally and philanthropically. He understands how to represent his clients and his friends. He is truly a man of good judgment and sound leadership.

If Virginia's corporate executives are attacking Englin, he must be doing something right!
