According to this story, it's looking more and more likely that John Warner will announce his retirement in September. Get ready for the Mark Warner/Tom Davis knockdown-dragout!

Just in time to call bull$h*t on the Petraeus "report" (The Grey Havens - 8/14/2007 8:50:07 PM)
Maybe Warner will have the cajones to call out Petraeus on what promises to be the worst official misrepresentation from this White House since Colin Powell at the UN.
Or... maybe not.
This is the best possible scenario (Ron1 - 8/14/2007 9:35:58 PM)
It gets rid of both John Warner and Tom Davis, and means I don't have to run for Senate against John Warner (just jokin' of course, but somebody would need to run against Warner in the event he decided his "leadership" was still needed).
Mark Warner is the type of person we need more of in the US Senate. Let's hope Davis runs against MW -- he'll get wiped out, and we'll have the opportunity to elect a progressive from (No)VA 11. Plus, MW has the kind of coattails that might make any and all of VA-1, VA-2, VA-6, and VA-10 competitive. Cantor and Goode are the worst of all 8 of the Republicans, but we'd need great candidates and grassroots effort to take those seats.
As much.. (novademocrat - 8/14/2007 10:49:09 PM)
as we'd like to give Tom Davis the republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2008, he will in all likelihood face a serious challenge, in what will probably be a convention. And if we know anything about Republican conventions, it is the right-wingers who turn out for those - not the moderates Tom Davis would need to win the nomination...
The Warner slot (David Campbell - 8/15/2007 8:49:37 AM)
Davis will have a tough primary fight. Davis will win, but then some of the diehard right-wingers may stay home during the general election.
Some of the electorate won't notice the difference from John to Mark and will vote for Warner out of habit. (Not that Virginia voters are stupid; I'm just saying!)
Not so fast, Lowell! (Senate 2008 Guru - 8/15/2007 12:41:14 PM)
Tom Davis will have to win his primary first. :)
True, and I personally hope he loses (Lowell - 8/15/2007 1:21:10 PM)
to Jim Gilmore. :)
