The Hampton Roads Transportation Authority will decide today if the cost of driving a vehicle and selling a home will increase. The new regional group is scheduled to meet in Chesapeake at 9 a.m. to consider a set of taxes and fees that would finance about $9 billion in transportation projects, which would take decades to build.
If the vote to tax wins, the authority is expected to seek a delay in implementing them until April 1, to give the Virginia General Assembly an opportunity to address rising public concerns about the plan.
Meanwhile, the public appears to have mixed feelings on the regional authority for Hampton Roads. One of my favorite comments was this one:
Louis Eisenberg of Norfolk said Hampton Roads residents are "hungry" for a good transportation plan."In fact, they are starving. The people in Richmond have cooked up a meal with some unsavory ingredients. They said they will not go back into the kitchen. If we don't eat, we surely will starve. ? It's better to eat and survive."
It will be interesting to see how "hungry" people in Hampton Roads really are for this plan.
