Frank Wolf: The (Far Right Wing) Company He Keeps

For whatever reason, a lot of people seem to think that Frank Wolf (R-10th) is a "moderate" Republican.  Well, check out the company he's keeping these days...

Wednesday, August 8
Wolf holds a press conference with Jill Holtzman Vogel. Fauquier County Courthouse, 40 Culpeper St, Warrenton. 11:00 AM.

Wolf attends the grand opening of the Winchester campaign headquarters of Jill Holtzman Vogel for State Senate. 117 East Piccadilly Square, Suite 100-B, Winchester. 11:00 AM.

Wolf attends a luncheon fundraiser for Jill Holtzman Vogel. Winchester Country Club, 1300 Senseny Road, Winchester. 12:30 PM.

Thursday, August 9
Wolf attends a Meet and Greet for Patricia Phillips for Senate. That's Amore, 46300 Potomac Run Plaza, Sterling. 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM.

Jill Holtzman Vogel? She's running against Democrat Karen Schultz in the 27th State Senate District to replace Russ PottsHoltzman Vogel is a typical right-wing Republican - against a woman's right to choose, part of the flat-earth anti-tax wing, for "school choice," etc.  She also served as counsel to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in the infamous Florida Presidential recount of 2000, working to steal the election make sure Al Gore wasn't declared the winner in West Palm Beach and in Osceola County.  Great stuff, huh?

Well, then there's Patricia "Dick Black Cat-Woman" Phillips, the Republican Senate candidate against Mark Herring in the 33rd district.  Phillips is as far right wing as you can get, the former executive director of the Virginia chapter of Concerned Women for America (CWA) and aligned closely with former Del. Dick "Baby Pesticides" Black (RRRRRRRR).  For more on the CWA's six "Core Issues," click here

In short, the CWA - where Phillips served as Executive Director - sees gay people as "sick," "disordered," "unnatural," and "immoral," needing to be "cured."  CWA opposes hate crimes legislation that applies to GLBT people.  CWA describes stem cell research as "deadly" and the destruction of "embryonic human beings." CWA opposes emergency contraception even in cases of rape! CWA is against abortion in nearly all cases. CWA even opposes mandating vaccination against cervical cancer.  Oh yeah, and CWA is for official prayer and the teaching of "intelligent design" in public schools.

That's what CWA believes, and that's what Patricia Phillips believes.  Since Frank Wolf is happily campaigning for Phillips, I presume he also believes these things?  Check this out and decide for yourself whether Frank Wolf is a "moderate" or not.

Really? (Va Blogger - 8/8/2007 11:36:39 AM)
"Since Frank Wolf is happily campaigning for Phillips, I presume he also believes these things?"

Do you honestly believe that? Do you honestly believe that a public official must agree 100% with a person they're campaigning for? Does the same apply to Democrats who, for instance, campaigned with John Kerry in 2004?

Well, the fact is that Wolf DOES believe (Lowell - 8/8/2007 11:52:08 AM)
a lot of these things. For instance, Wolf opposes stem cell research.  Wolf is strongly anti-choice and ant-gay-rights.  Wolf got a 100% rating from the Family Research Council.  What's "moderate" about any of that?

Also, YES, the "company one keeps" (Lowell - 8/8/2007 11:57:18 AM)
is an important indicator as to ones' own beliefs.  As George Allen said last year, "You can tell a lot about people by the folks they stand with."  For once, I agree with him.

Okay. (Va Blogger - 8/8/2007 11:58:56 AM)
Congressman Wolf may oppose federal funding for embryonic stem cells, and may be pro-life, but that doesn't support your original hypothesis that he is obligated to agree with candidates he campaigns for 100% of the time.

However, and forgive me if I'm not as well-versed in Wolf's record as you are, I believe that Wolf's moderate reputation is based on fiscal matters and foreign policy more than his social positions. I believe that was the basis for the Washington Post's endorsement of him last year:

"But if Mr. Wolf has proved anything in 26 years in Congress, it is that he is more than a party-line Republican."

That's hilarious (Lowell - 8/8/2007 12:08:54 PM)
On foreign policy, Wolf has voted in lockstep with Bush and Cheney on Iraq and pretty much everything else.  On fiscal matters, Wolf was part of the Republican Congress which racked up record spending and record deficits from 2001 to 2006.  For more on Frank Wolf's "moderate" record, see here and here.

Interesting. (Va Blogger - 8/8/2007 12:15:45 PM)
So he's extreme to the right on social issues, extreme to the right on fiscal issues, and extreme to the right on foreign policy. Yet, oddly enough, many people consider him a moderate.

This is all very interesting. Either Frank Wolf is capable of decieving millions of people at a time with very little effort on his part, or the word of someone who is paid to help elect Democrats isn't the most objective judge of a well-respected Republican.

Lots of politicians deceive (Lowell - 8/8/2007 12:25:29 PM)
but it's a matter of public record.  Don't listen to me, go look up Wolf's votes and you decide what you think for yourself.  Also, you might want to see what Wolf's "Barry Goldwater/Ronald Reagan Republican" opponent has to say about him.  It's not pretty.

For instance, (Lowell - 8/8/2007 12:29:59 PM)
Wolf voted to ban stem cell research and opposed expanding federal stem cell research. Yet, when Wolf was asked about this in 2006, he dodged the question, claiming that he simply opposes federal funding of stem cell research, not the actual research itself.

See what I mean about deception?  There are LOTS more examples.

I feel (legacyofmarshall - 8/8/2007 12:37:03 PM)
That a lot of what gives someone a 'moderate' label is how they talk.

Last year Senator Hagel came to speak to my class at school and I was fully expecting to see the truth about the supposed 'moderate.'  I had seen his voting record, and beyond foreign policy he was a hard-core conservative.  Hearing him speak was a breath of fresh air, however.  He talked about reforming energy not by turning corn into gas (and he's from Nebraska) but by putting up wind farms and solar plants.  He said that a comprehensive reform of Social Security would take 70 years, and no Democrat or Republican in Washington has a quick fix that will work.

I've never heard Wolf speak but if it's anything like that, sure, people might call him a moderate, despite his voting record.

Now, I live in Congressman Wolf's district, and I know plenty of Democrats who vote for him time and time again.  I say: shame on them.  Wolf is part of the problem; he'll never contribute to the solution.

Wolf even voted against the 9/11 Commission's (Lowell - 8/8/2007 12:42:53 PM)
recommendations.  That's "moderate?"

Here's Wolf speaking (Lowell - 8/8/2007 1:02:34 PM)

You decide - is this guy "moderate" in tone or what, ranting about how this is 1937/1938 and the Nazis are coming.

Holzman Vogel also attorney for RNC at time of emails (teacherken - 8/8/2007 2:44:35 PM)
and hence might well be looking down the barrel of a subpoena courtesy of Henry Waxman.

Potts totally rejected her as his successor.  Remains to be seen if he will actually endorse Karen, but he will NOT endorse Jill.
