Today in History: "The Battle of Kos"

I was checking out what happened on August 4 historically, and I found some interesting stuff.

*In the year 70 AD, the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

*In 1753, George Washington became a Master Mason, "the highest basic rank in the fraternity of Freemasonry."

*In 1914, Germany invaded Belgium, and the UK declared war on Germany.

*In 1964, two U.S. destroyers report being attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam.

*And in 1824, the "Battle of Kos" was fought between Turks and Greeks.  I just threw this one in here because this weekend is the Yearly Kos convention, and there's a modern "battle of Kos" being fought between Fox News/Bill O'LIElly and the progressive blogosphere.  The more things change...

This Is Interesting (BP - 8/4/2007 2:08:44 PM)
"Mithridates sent to Kos to fetch the gold deposited there by Queen Cleopatra."

So now, it seems that Bill O' has been sent by King Rupert of Fox to Kos (the web site) to fetch the gold (in the modern form of millions of page views) and return it to the Kingdom of Fox News.

The "Battle of Kos" reference reminded me of a visit to Santorini about nine years ago.  My wife and I were relaxing on one of the most peaceful beaches we've ever experienced when, suddenly, a couple of F-15s roared by, less than one hundred feet over our heads.  About thirty seconds later, two more raced by in apparent hot pursuit.  I thought World War III had begun, smack in the middle of my vacation (damnit!).  Turns out, it was nothing more than the once a week or so game of chicken Turkish and Greek soldiers have been playing for centuries, or longer.  Now, of course, they play their ongoing game of chicken with multi-million dollar toys.

Even with the disruptive buzzing of fighter jets, the Greek Islands are some of the most enjoyable and beautiful places on the planet.  Maybe the increased publicity generated by Bill O's "Battle of Kos" will enable Yearly Kos to expand into "Worldly Kos," with a convention on the island of Kos.  I'd attend.

Great story! (Lowell - 8/4/2007 4:24:51 PM)
Thanks.
