Dem Congress passes 9/11 Commission, no thanks to Virgil Goode

A major accomplishment for the Democratic Congress and the nation:
Congress sent President Bush legislation Friday to intensify anti-terror efforts in the U.S., shifting money to high-risk states and cities and expanding screening of air and sea cargo to stave off future September 11-style attacks.

The measure carries out major recommendations of the independent 9/11 Commission....

Six years after the Sept. 11 attacks and three years after the 9/11 Commission made its recommendations, "Congress is finally embracing what the 9/11 families have been saying all along," said Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi. "It takes a willingness to do things a different way."

Three years since the 9/11 Commission's recommendations?!  That means the Republican-led Congress before Jan. 2006 sat on their hands for 2-+ years.  The Dems take over and pass this neglected bill a few months later.

Now, the House passed this bill by an overwhelming majority, with only 40 Republicans opposing.  And guess who's part of that tiny minority that voted against the Improving America's Security Act of 2007?  Yup, our very own Virgil Goode.  Some quick Internet searching didn't reveal his reason. Anybody venture to guess?  I'm betting he was angry there wasn't any pork for MZM in there.

I always wondered (Teddy - 7/28/2007 11:24:25 AM)
why the Bush Administration took the national security money which was appropriated, and then sent it in huge chunks to such illogical places as, say, Wyoming, while cutting the funds allocated to high risk places like New York and Washington, D.C.

Aside from the obvious political reason that the high risk areas were nests of Democrats and Wyoming was pro-Bush, it occurred to me that Bush and Buddies knew very darned well there was NO real terror threat, at least not immediate, and they were merely using fear of terror as another way of plundering the American taxpayer for the benefit of their cronies and corporate masters.  How did they know there was no real terror threat? I can think of many reasons, none of them good, and they run to things like collusion (in cahoots with Osama, perhaps?), or knowing the terrorists had momentarily shot their wad and this was the opportunity Bush was looking for to enhance his dictatorial powers, or worse, the attack on the Towers was a conspiracy in which key Bushites were actually involved.  I have always been wary of conspiracies, at least big, elaborate, byzantine conspiracies (which in the past were usually the brainchildren of moist little Republican-type minds) but this Administration has begun to make me change my mind, and I continue to wonder...

MZM has not been in the contracting business for a couple of years.

As the link in your article says:

The Pentagon awarded the original contract to MZM. The contract was later sold to Athena Innovative Solutions.

Yes, MZM sold all of their contracts to Athena

MZM is out of the contracting business.

Duke Cunningham is in jail.

Mitchell Wade is awaiting sentencing.

Energy should now be focused on replacing the bigoted Virgil Goode.

I know, I was kidding. (Rob - 7/28/2007 1:02:10 PM)
