This Monday July 30, Tom Herbert will be holding a kick-off event for his run against uber-conservative Jimmie Massie.  The event will take place at 6:00 PM at Godwin High School in the West End of Henrico.  (Specific address: 2101 Pump Rd., Richmond, VA)  The selection of a high school is no accident; Herbert's campaign is specifically highlighting his support for public education against Republican privatization schemes.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.  The staff is hoping to draw a lot of media attention, and we want to make sure the Democrats are well-represented in this historically conservative district.
For those of you unaware of the background of the race, Tom Herbert is running to replace retiring delegate John S. Reid.  Reid was very popular, and Democrats didn't run a candidate in the district for several cycles.  Jimmie Massie, an arch-conservative and board member of the far-right activist group, Family Foundations of Virginia, won the primary battle against relative moderate, Jimmy Wheat.  So far Massie has issued very little in the way of policy positions, so we can only infer from his associations what he will stand for.  And believe me, that is scary.

Hope to see a lot of you there!  And as the race progresses, I will continue blogging it here and at my site, Brad's Brain.

What is the political balance (jiacinto - 7/29/2007 5:24:16 PM)
of this district? Do the Democrats have a realistic chance?

Possibly (bherring - 8/1/2007 6:16:49 PM)
It's heavily Republican, but not a lot make it out for the local stuff.  A fairly under-the-radar campaign, where there aren't a lot of arrows slung in the media, coupled with a great ground operation could swing it our way.
