Griffith and Kilgore are Abusive Drivers!

You almost can't make this stuff up.  That's right:

Two advocates of a state transportation bill that included "abusive driver fees" were each caught during the past year driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 81.

House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith and Del. Terry Kilgore's tickets weren't eligible for the abuser fees, which just took effect July 1 and can run as high as $3,000 for a felony offense. But if they'd been driving just a little faster and few months later, each could have been subjected to a $1,050 fee to be paid over three years.

If you think THAT is good, read the entire article, cuz there's a lot more.  For instance, how both Kilgore and Griffith "are members of that committee's judicial panel, which selects judges -- including the Rockbridge County General District Court judge who will hear their cases."

Yes, and if they played a little looser with the facts and had a few more hours on their hands to make useless points, they'd be bloggers.

At least these guys didn't pull the "don't you know who I am" line like some people in positions of power. Right?

Maybe they did (Eric - 7/26/2007 2:50:45 PM)
pull that old trick - we only know about the times it didn't work  ;-)

Just kidding.  I'm sure they're fine drivers who travel great distances on a regular basis and when that happens, speeds generally creep up.  Which is one of the many reasons these fees are all sorts of wrong - average drivers are going to get nailed for doing things that aren't really that bad.

Cruise control (ScottCoDemocrat - 7/26/2007 4:03:49 PM)
I'm going to have to ask Terry if he's heard of cruise control.

In addition, we all know that troopers often shave a mile or two off the summons to avoid writing a reckless driving ticket.

At least neither of the delegates tried to invoke legislative immunity.  Now that's a get out of jail free card that needs to be repealed.

OPPS, I didn't mean to post this twice.

Next thursday (Emperor Palpatine - 7/26/2007 6:28:43 PM)
will be the day of reckoning. http://vlweekly.blog...

That's when you should find out if you can dance a jig or max out your credit card. But I have a prediction. The judge will find it constitutional, and he's going to have to pay.

Reason why? Because the attorneys are only arguing 1 aspect of this law, and it's not going to fly. They should also be arguing that it's an excessive fine that is outlawed under the constitution as well as an illegal tax.

I have the feeling that even IF it is on the slim chance found unconny, that they'll repeal the law, rewrite it so it complies with equal protection and then pass it again to make it legal. But then again, what would stop them from doing it with lowering the fees as well? But that would take more time to work out the details I'm sure. Just like how the system is screwed up in the NJ law which is what led to the task force investigating its effects and how to correct it, WITHOUT scrapping the whole thing. Either way, NJ still hasn't fixed it, and the suffering goes on despite the task force recommendations.

"let's assume" (Emperor Palpatine - 7/26/2007 6:46:08 PM)
a hush falls over the saps in the audience..

He was driving 81 mph my ass. We all know you don't get pulled over from being spotted in an aircraft unless you were driving other motorists off the road doing your Dale Earnhardt impression.

This guy was probably going more like 90 and weaving in and out of traffic, or he just happened to be the only one on the road. And we all know cops reduce most tickets they write. If he wanted to, the trooper could have nailed that SOB. And if these fees were in effect then and the cop was upset about them affecting family members, he would have nailed him.

I live in the Short Pump area of Very Blue - Turning Purple Henrico County.
A few years ago, when he was Com. Atty. He blew by me on Broad St during morning rush hour doing about 70 in a 45 and talking on the phone.

Probably on the way to make a big terrorist bust or something.

What a weasel.

Can you imagine him making the speech at the VT Service?  How awful would that have been.  Thank you Virginia for electing Tim Kaine.
