Rather than government working to make it more difficult to get divorced, it probably would be better for government to make it easier for families to stay together by working on things like the minimum wage and health care.
Right on, Adam. The only problem is, this would take effort, a willingness to look at those pesky things called "facts" (aka, "reality"), and a respect for personal privacy. Unfortunately, the right-wing social "conservatives" don't have any of those things in abundance.
By the way, another excellent quote on this issue comes from outgoing State Sen. Russ Potts (R-Winchester), who says "I think it's obviously an overreach to get involved in the personal matters of a man and wife." Too bad Russ Potts is retiring; we need Republicans like him to counter the "bedroom police" wing.
P.S. Does anyone else find it hilariously ironic that it takes a gay man (Adam Ebbin) to understand how to strengthen heterosexual marriage a lot better than a group called the "Family Foundation?" Ha.
Now on to another grim side of this "organization". Seems that the "Family" Foundation has issued an information alert demonizing the Virginia Education Association for passing a resolution at its most recent convention that would add
sexual orientation to non-discrimination policies in Virginia. Needless to say the alert is full of propoganda and statements such as "...stand against the VEA on the issue of special treatment for homosexuals". All the VEA's resolution asks is that homosexuals not be discriminated against. No one's asking for special treatment.
A question I have for families that would support an organization like the Family Foundation is: how do deal with your own homosexual children? Do you lock them in closets? Do you shame them for something that they are born with? Do you try to make them "normal"?
Here are a sampling of the "ultra-left wing resolutions" coming out of the VEA convention this summer:
? Seek and support legislation to add sexual orientation to the Commonwealth of Virginia's non-discrimination statement and employment policies.
? Urge that delegates to the VEA convention write Governor Kaine and General Assembly members "to express dismay" with their failure "to take appropriate actions to attract and retain high-quality teachers in Virginia's classrooms." Legislators and the governor failed to pass a salary bill this year that would have brought Virginia teacher salaries closer to the national average. (To write a letter, go to www.veaweteach.org and click on "Action Alert.")
? Encourage Virginia Sen. John Warner and Sen. Jim Webb to support legislation in Congress to curb high interest rates on student loans.
