Kos Cracks Down

Good for Markos of Daily Kos for writing this:
There has lately been an alarming rise in diaries and comments that seek to impugn (without evidence) the motives of those they disagree with on various issues.
Yes, there's the impeachment stuff, but this nasty rhetoric is also rampant in the primary war diaries.
This points to a serious breakdown not just on civility, but in the ability of people to properly debate various issues. As such, it presents a serious threat to the integrity of this site.

...I won't let this site become as nasty as your typical usenet forum, and those who encourage that sort of environment should consider themselves duly warned.
I hope that Kos doesn't have to follow up on his warning. At its best, Daily Kos has a great deal to offer. At its worst, I've seen it taken over by - as Markos describes them - people who are "just as 'out there' as the 'black helicopter' crowd." I've also seen "ridiculous conspiracy theor[ies]" (as Markos says) and general idiocy, like people claiming sunspots cause global warming. Then there are the people who bash various Democratic Presidential candidates as if THEY were the enemy, not the torture-crazy, Constitution-shredding, "double Gitmo," global-warming-denying Republicans. For all those reasons, I've pretty much avoided Daily Kos since the Webb-Allen election. It's just no fun right now.

Yeah, I have been partly avoiding it too... (ericy - 7/24/2007 9:06:00 AM)
Mainly read the front page stories, and browse recommended diaries. It just isn't the same place that it used to be in the past...
I never got around to registering for YKos either. Although to be fair, a lot of that was because my dad passed in June, and YKos didn't seem like a high priority at the time...
Yeah, that's about all I do (Lowell - 7/24/2007 9:16:17 AM)
"Mainly read the front page stories, and browse recommended diaries."
I hope that Markos' crackdown works, because Daily Kos is too valuable a resource to let it be ruined by incivility and looniness.
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father (Catzmaw - 7/24/2007 1:10:51 PM)
It does put things in perspective. As to Kos, I have been annoyed at the more extreme nonsense and pleased that Markos is trying to get things under control.
My condolences as well. (Lowell - 7/24/2007 1:38:14 PM)

Front page only for me... (Tom Joad (Kevin) - 7/24/2007 10:08:42 AM)
and it's a friggin' shame since there are good diarists on DKos. I just can't stand the stupid posts that are then highlighted by that damn Bill O'Reilly and used to castigate Jet Blue for supporty the DKos convention.
One reason (Teddy - 7/24/2007 11:13:10 AM)
I long ago ceased either reading or posting much on DK was the irrational extremism and untrammeled arguments, the personal villification over the most minute and hairsplitting of details. More and more the successive deterioration made it impossible to have a real discussion without its unravelling into silliness.
As for attacks by Fox-esque pundits, well, they would find or manufacture something to sneer at no matter what. Their looniness, incivility, and viciousness is broadcast on public airways, not published on a private venue, and I object to that far more--- so I do not watch them either. In fact, the loss of civility and the deliberate character assassination is due exactly to the right wing public commentators and talk radio, not to Daily Kos.
They all, in my opinion, are little savages who are from the caveman days of humanity, and somehow escaped being civilized by their mothers; most of their comments and vocabulsary have about them a sort of "Nyah, nyah, Mom, I'm going to be nasty, and you can't stop me!" They're juvenile show-offs.
Enemy (JScott - 7/24/2007 12:36:31 PM)
I was saddened that after such integrity based comments by Markos that the referenced made above was that the Republicans are our "enemies". That basically legitimizes the other side of wackos for their treatment of Democrats. I think maybe we all need a real reality check as just who it is that are this nations enemies. I think if we dig deep we will find that its truly not Democrats or Republicans as we are all Americans first or is that only apply when a trajedy like 9/11 strikes.
Let me go back to 2005 (Gordie - 7/24/2007 2:05:32 PM)
In 2005 I ran for East District Supervisor in Nelson County as an Independant. At that time I belonged to an organization called Real Nelson, we banded together to fight a zoning ordinance, in Dec, 2004. Oh, I should say about 90 percent were Republicans and at the first meeting, I asked if this was a Political organization and the answr was NO.
In Febuary '05, I declared my candidacy and from that point on I was their candidate and was constantly declared as their candidate.
May 24th? the Republicans had a caucus and out of the blue a person from that same organization, who said they would not run was nominated, and accepted.
After that caucus I was constanly congradulated openly and stabbed in the back privately.
So YES Republicans are my "enemy" and I will do all in my power openly to defeat any Republican running for office.
Are they the same type of enemy as Al-Quida, NO. But they are an enemy who will openly support but will back stab at the same time. No Republican can be taken at their word.
Just look at Senator John Warner, he will openly speak against the WAR, but when it comes to voting he votes to continue something he speaks against. A two faced person, if I ever heard one.
And yes I emailed him and called hin two faced with his vote on the recent Webb and Hagel amendments.
In closing, I take big exception to the comment that Republicans are not an enmey.
Exception (JScott - 7/25/2007 1:06:18 AM)
While I regret the circumstances with which you refered, I feel you are on very dangerous ground when you throw the book at all Republicans for what happened in your situation. Your issue is with those in Nelson County that betrayed you. You are painting a broad stroke here. I find what happen if as you say to be down right despicable and dirty politics. Most Republicans outside Nelson County would probably agree with you or at least I hope they would. We all can disagree on the issues all we want but I would hope that somehow you someday will loose the malace in your heart caused by a few unethical people. I take exception with the whole being cast as "enemies" as a result of actions by a few. Call them out and hold them accountable for their actions.
kos is too big (pvogel - 7/24/2007 2:42:47 PM)
Just way too much stuff on daily kos , (Just my observation)
As a retiree, I have even less free time than when I worked!
Quinn from drinking liberally alexandria is going to yearly kos
Lot of anger on Kos (Nick Stump - 7/24/2007 4:57:29 PM)
I've posted diaries on rural issues or commented on the same. Often I'm shouted down by some moron who has made his mind up. Nothing like someone calling you an ignorant hillbilly or an inbred to make you want to associate with that crowd.
