Give 'em Hell, Harry!

I had a Republican colleague tell me it is the Republican strategy to try to prevent any accomplishment of the Democratic Congress. That is set in their caucus openly and directly that they don't intend to allow Democrats to have any legislative successes, and they intend to do it by repeated filibuster. - Sen Kent Conrad (D-ND)

It's put up or shut up time in the US Senate, and the Democrats under the leadership of Senator Harry Reid are going to force Senate Republicans to quit playing politics with the troops in Iraq.  You want a filibuster?  You got it!

"I would like to inform the Republican leadership and all my colleagues that we have no intention of backing down," said Reid this afternoon. "If Republicans do not allow a vote on Levin/Reed today or tomorrow, we will work straight through the night on Tuesday. The American people deserve an open and honest debate on this war, and they deserve an up or down vote on this amendment to end it."

Reid could hold the Senate in continuous session overnight Tuesday and into midday Wednesday unless Republicans agree to a simple-majority vote on Reed-Levin.

[Reid's full speech here,  and watch the video at at Think Progress.]

Better start brewin' some coffee!  Looks like it's going to be a late night on Capitol Hill tonight.

Bob Geiger has details.

Give them Hell! (Hugo Estrada - 7/16/2007 4:44:29 PM)
Let's see if they actually talk the talk...

This just says it all... (The Grey Havens - 7/16/2007 5:07:31 PM)

A little overtime (MohawkOV1D - 7/16/2007 5:58:54 PM)
before a four week vacation.  I'm impressed.

That'll show those Republicans.

Go Harry!

Why, with a 51 seat magority was the Republican Senate able to pass every bill pushed by the WH?  Yet this Democraticly controled Senate can't pass gas!

It's called the veto (The Grey Havens - 7/16/2007 6:14:22 PM)
look it up.

Don't be a worthless (MohawkOV1D - 7/16/2007 7:59:03 PM)
DOUCHE!

You know what was meant.  PASS THE SENATE.

If you can't make your points without (Lowell - 7/16/2007 9:18:46 PM)
using foul language, you will be banned.

It's your Blog (MohawkOV1D - 7/16/2007 11:02:07 PM)
I cruise by your rules.

However, you've allowed posters on this Blog to call me much worse, and not a peep from you.  And if what I used is a naughty word, then feminine hygiene companies are in BIG trouble.

Point to an example... (Lowell - 7/17/2007 10:30:57 AM)
...and I'll give them the same warning.

I'm not playing (MohawkOV1D - 7/17/2007 11:37:37 AM)
this game.

Why do you say it's a game? (Lowell - 7/17/2007 12:07:56 PM)
I'm totally serious.

Well (MohawkOV1D - 7/17/2007 12:50:50 PM)
here is one.  Guess you over looked it:

Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
Well you can tell those gun nutty mofo's to get their gun raffle out of my backyard...they can go use the guns out in the forest where they may have something to shoot...in the middle of this bustling suburb, what the hell are they doing?
I'm sorry but fuck those idiots, as a Mason District resident, and as a Mason District Democratic Committee Member (who meets in that very same building) the last thing I want is people to get guns through a RAFFLE!?!?!?!

I have a Keep it to yourself policy on guns, if you have them fine, "Keep them to your damn self," but if you're going to flaunt guns and not treat them as the dangerous objects that they are, and instead treat them like door prizes in a raffle, I'm sorry, get the hell out of my neighborhood with your gun-nuttitude.

He used a bad word but didn't (Lowell - 7/17/2007 12:56:04 PM)
make an ad hominem attack on you or any other specific individual.  This one's borderline, but I'd certainly discourage the use of profanity as much as possible.

Just to clarify, you specifically called (Lowell - 7/17/2007 12:56:45 PM)
"The Grey Havens" a feminine hygiene product.  I think you could have made your point without doing that.  Thanks.

Borderline? (MohawkOV1D - 7/17/2007 1:15:51 PM)
Sure, how about this one?  You missed it as well.  However, I get the message.  If one does not share the hero worship then please don't bother to post.

This guys been trolling this story from the get-go (4.00 / 1)
Well, how can I say this?  Only one way, I guess.  Mohawk seems to be a snide little prick who has taken some perverse pleasure out of this story.  His comments on another thread were insulting to Webb's honor and now he's decided to seek more attention with sarcasm. I've never troll-rated anyone in my life and I won't now because I'm assuming we're dealing with a college sophomore who hasn't learned a damned thing about real life. Mohawk should engage his brain before he starts typing, but maybe he wants attention, even if it's negative.
This incident is a shame, but things like this happen, and there no blame to place when something unfortunate when an accident happens.  In a normal courtroom, this matter would be cleared up pretty quickly and the justice system is flexible enough in most circumstances to deal with these sort of problems.

I was on jury duty recently and most of the time, officers of the court work pretty hard trying to cut deals to avoid trials.  I hope the same thing can happen here.  It would not be justice if such a fine man was ruined by such an unfortunate mistake.

Well, this one IS an ad hominem attack. (Lowell - 7/17/2007 1:46:37 PM)
So, let me reiterate, we strongly discourage ad hominem attacks on other bloggers or members of this community, foul language and the like on Raising Kaine.  Repeated violations of RK posting policies will lead to warnings and possible banning.

Feel better now (MohawkOV1D - 7/17/2007 2:13:00 PM)
that we played the game?

The results were amazing and much different than what I expected.

Ever hear of... (LT - 7/17/2007 9:10:29 AM)
a filibuster? 60 votes are needed to pass almost everything in the Senate (other than the budget).

Yep, (MohawkOV1D - 7/17/2007 10:29:11 AM)
but not for the last six years.  Seems to be a procedjure that only republicans can use while democrats had forgotten these parlimentary procedures during their stint in the miniority.

I am ever hopefull that democrats find their spine, stick together and make life as difficult for bushco and their little elves in congress as possible.

Bring back the Webb Amendment (Shawn - 7/16/2007 5:36:29 PM)
Senator Webb's Amendment deserves the same treatment and the vote on Wednesday July 11th proves it has more than a mjority of Senators that are willing to actually support our troops.

The Webb Amendment does a great job of letting our military how we, as a Nation, should be treating our troops and their families.  Let Harry Reid know if you agree with me.

I agree 100% (The Grey Havens - 7/16/2007 5:44:37 PM)
Bring that bad boy back and force these Republicans to spend 30 hours telling the American people why the soldiers don't ever deserve to see their families, rest, or train.

This is FANTASTIC--an all nighter to roast their consciences! (Shenandoah Democrat - 7/16/2007 8:18:18 PM)
As one who has sat on the Senate floor (1979) through a filibuster/all- nighter, I can tell you they are very useful for bringing out all the demons, sparking a lot of emotion, and defining who stands where. This is Harry Reids's smartest and best move on Iraq so far, and will shame at least a few rethugs, I bet, into switching their vote. Perhaps most important, this will be the first time such a major issue can be watched via the internet , I assume (CSPAN?) This will only make the rethugs look like idiots. Forget the coffee, some fine wine or good beer to hoist a few to the courageous leadership of Reid/Webb/Levin is in order.
BTW, I just watched the Webb/Graham debate on MTP, and was grossly offended by Senator Graham's style, tactics and utter lack of facts. This guy is finished if a good candidate can be found to run against him.  What a thug. He's sort of like a smart George Allen--VERY Dangerous.

Same tactic (MohawkOV1D - 7/16/2007 8:45:20 PM)
the republicans all ways use - shout them down, bully them, and make them look weak.

For once, they picked the wrong guy, or better yet, for once a Democrat stood up for himself.
