"There will not be a special session"

According to House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith (R-Salem), quoted in today's DC Examiner, "There will not be a special session"  of the General Assembly to modify or scrap the hated "abuser fees" for traffic violations.  And even in January 2008, legislators "will probably look at some small changes" to the fees, according to Sen. Jay O?Brien, R-Clifton.  Looks like this will be a significant campaign issue, as Del. Kris Amundson (D-Fairfax) confirmed last night on Blog Talk Radio

P.S.  Let Albo, Rust, Griffith, O'Brien et al. know what you think of these fees by signing this petition.

Wow. (Eric - 7/16/2007 9:56:28 AM)
The flat-earth Republicans really don't get it.  They are so obsessed with their anti-tax philosophy they've blinded themselves to the fact that most people hate the abuser fees even more than a tax increase.

They know that if they go to special session, or even wait until January, that they'll have to find extra funding if they do away with the insane abuser fees.  Which will leave them with few options except tax increases of some sort.  They won't do that, so it's little or no change to this monstrosity.

But they've missed the bigger point.  People hate raising taxes at a gut level because they have to give more money to the government.  Increasing traffic violation punishment, to the point of absurdity, is even less popular than a tax increase because people are now faced with giving the government thousands of dollars for what amounts to a minor infractions.  Plain and simple, most people hate this bill (with it's major fines/fees) more than they'd hate an insignificant tax increase.

Virginia is worse off because of these flat-earthers, but personally I like their position because it's only going to help Democrats this year.  Keep up the [sarcasm]good work, guys.

isn't (leftofcenter - 7/16/2007 9:58:59 AM)
it up to the governor and not the majority leader if there is to be a special session or not? I could be mis informed.
