According to Reuters, Gov. "No Car Tax" (aka, Jim Gilmore) is now out of the 2008 Presidential race. Was it the eye surgery, or was it a clear-eyed appraisal of his chances, which were zero, of winning the Republican nomination? Regardless, we now have no Virginians - George Allen, Mark Warner, Jim Gilmore - running for the Democratic or Republican nominations in 2008. What will we do for entertainment around here? :)

To quote Steve Benen at Talking Points Memo, (Randy Klear - 7/14/2007 9:02:52 PM)
"I'm reluctant to kick a guy when he's down, but the truth is, Gilmore's presidential ambitions were always difficult to understand. He was a wildly unsuccessful governor, which preceded an equally unsuccessful tenure running the Republican National Committee (Karl Rove reportedly fired him)."
Pretty much says it all, doesn't it?
I can't really add much to that... (Lowell - 7/14/2007 11:34:58 PM)
...except to recall that Gilmore nearly drove Virginia into a ditch. Good riddance.
Correction to "good riddance" (Lowell - 7/15/2007 8:30:01 AM)
According to the
Washington Post, Gilmore is seriously thinking about running for US Senate in 2008 or Governor in 2009. Thrills.
gilmore gone (pvogel - 7/14/2007 11:22:00 PM)
to whit, the only thing I have to say about this
NEXT!!!!
My fear is... (presidentialman - 7/15/2007 12:29:04 AM)
that with Gilmore gone, then that means why should people campaign in Virginia? Its not that important, not like Iowa or New Hampshire. And sure Jim Webb turned the Senate to the Democrats, but he's just like other states that might have had both Democrats and Republicans in office. I mean Global Warming has been happening for a long time, but none of the candidates ever addressed it till Arnold put California's primary ahead of others and it dominated headlines. Sure, have a good chuckle over this now, but when the chickens come home to roost...
The Virginian-Pilot Wants Your Thoughts on Gilmore (Susan P. - 7/15/2007 7:14:09 AM)
Today's Virginian-Pilot asks for your opinion on Jim
Gilmore. Please go ahead and give it to them. I did.
Prediction-----Jim Gilmore runs for Senate (Gordie - 7/15/2007 8:32:24 AM)
From Democratic Central.

Gilmore the Sick (The Old Town Observer - 7/15/2007 8:50:31 AM)
Let's See...Gilmore did away with the dreaded car tax. One consequece was that the State government was almost shut down for lack of funds and another has been that all of the illegal aliens in No. Va. who drive around in Escalades and Navigators pay no taxes at all. Then Gilmore became Chair of the National Republican Party. One consequence was that I stopped donating to the National. I just gave to our locals. And then Gilmore after six months claimed to want to step down because of "family" reasons. Yeah...Right. A guy with his ambition stepping down because of "family" reasons. Try..They saw what a dope he was over at the National. One consequence of his leaving the National. I began donating again. Now Gilmore the Ambitious steps down from his Pres. bid because of some "eye" problem. Yeah...Right. Try...The rest of the country is smarter than the Virginia Electorate and sees what the National saw when they got a close look.
Most people will not care (Dan - 7/15/2007 5:07:11 PM)
If there ever was a non-entity in a Presidential race, it is Jim Gilmore. Nobody knew who he was. In the debates, he was that guy standing there who nobody knew. At least Mike Gravel has distinguished himself as different with the Democrats even though he has no shot, but even as a non-entity where he would be free to speak up about his views and to say something original, Jim Gilmore is incapable. But hey, at least we have no George Allen in this race. After watching Jim Webb today, can you believe that George Allen was ever considered a viable Presidential candidate?
