Dear Gentlepersons:
Bill Moyers just had Bruce Fein and John Nichols on his PBS program NOW. They make a convincing case that the Congress should proceed with the impeachment of President Bush II and Vice-President Cheney. And I agree with their assessment.

First, for background from 2006:

"Restrain this White House"
by Bruce Fein
"... So conservatives should weep if Democrats prevail in the House or Senate.
But perhaps not.
The most conservative principle of the Founding Fathers was distrust of unchecked power. Centuries of experience substantiated that absolute power corrupts absolutely. ... As Edward Gibbon wrote in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: ?The principles of a free constitution are irrevocably lost, when the legislative power is nominated by the executive.?
But a Republican Congress has done nothing to thwart President George W. Bush?s alarming usurpations of legislative prerogatives. Instead, it has largely functioned as an echo chamber of the White House. ..."
... Bruce Fein is a constitutional and international lawyer with Bruce Fein & Associates and The Lichfield Group. He served as associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan and was a member of the ABA Task Force on presidential signing statements.

And now, in 2007, this illuminative work:
"The Genius of Impeachment" by John Nichols

For reflection:
"The loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or imagined, from abroad." ~ James Madison
"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." ~ G. Washington
"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." ~ G. Washington
"... a prince who is not wise himself will never take good advice, ..." ~ Machiavelli
A written response from anyone, especially those occupying a Constitutionally established public office, will be welcome?
With every good wish,
John
