Pro-Tax Increase Group Endorses Kilgore

Right wingers are too busy gloating about the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce's endorsement of Jerry Kilgore to actually think about it for a minute. But consider this: the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce is the same group behind the 2002 Northern Virginia transportation sales tax referendum that would have raised $140 million annually for the region's road and transit needs.  In the end, the referendum was defeated by a combination of anti-tax and anti-sprawl voters.  However, the Chamber of Commerce hasn't given up trying to raise our taxes to pay for ITS priorities.  Now, it has endorsed supposedly "anti-tax" candidate Jerry Kilgore, even though Tim Kaine's proposed transportation policies would appear to be far more in line with the Chamber's goals.

What's going on here?  Could this have something to do with Jerry Kilgore's preference for tax referenda, or his refusal to sign the Virginia "Taxpayer Protection Plan?"  In other words, does the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce actually believe that Jerry Kilgore is the candidate who's most likely to raise taxes on the public to pay for new roads that benefit its members (can we say "corporate welfare?").  That IS the Chamber's ultimate goal, after all.  Very interesting...
