According to a new AmericanResearch Group poll, 84% of Americans "oppose a complete presidential pardon" for Vice President Cheney's former aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.  Among independents, a stunning 97% oppose pardoning Libby, with 80% even opposing Bush's decision to commute Libby's prison sentence.  Even among Republicans, Bush's decision to commute the sentence isn't exactly wildly popular, with 50% in favor and 47% opposed. Democrats and Independents strongly oppose Bush's commutation of Libby.

In other news, ARG reports that 69% of Democrats and 50% of Independents favor impeaching President Bush, with 22% snd 30%, respectively, opposing such a move.  Among Republicans, only 13% favor impeaching President Bush.

With regard to Vice President Cheney, 54% of Americans favor impeaching him, with just 40% opposed.  The margins in favor of impeaching Cheney are large among Democrats (76%-24%) and Independents (51%-29%), while Republicans are strongly opposed (17%-83%).

That's a stunning repudiation of President Bush and Vice President Cheney by almost any standard.  Ouch.

46% oppose impeaching Bush (humanfont - 7/6/2007 7:06:02 PM)
46% opposed and we haven't even started hearings.  45% support it today and 9% are undecided.  Hearings on Cheney could move that number down quickly.

By contrast opposition to Clinton's impeachment was ALWAYS over 50% and after hearings 53% of Americans opposed it.

Impeachment still a partisan issue (Teddy - 7/6/2007 7:23:19 PM)
according to the poll, however, noting the opposition by Republicans. I agree however that, given the evidence currently on the table, it imperative, for Constitutional reasons, to begin an impeachment investigationm which is NOT actual impeachment (see teacherken's article and my comment there).  The investigation should, however, begin with Cheney, as explained in my comments on teachken's article above.

The entire issue will inevitably be politicized by the right wing of so-called conservatives, and the Wurlitzer organ of conservative public propaganda will institute a defeaning political attack. So what? We are now in the frightening territory of having to re-establish Constitutional powers and checks and balance; that requires backbone. This is not a partisan issue; we may find that old-line conservatives will be the strongest supporters of the investigation.

If the Vice-President has nothing to hide and is not guilty of abuses of power and of impeachable offenses, then he should welcome the investigation which will clear him. Right?

Impeachment Should Be Higher (norman swingvoter - 7/6/2007 7:24:40 PM)
In my opinion I have to question anyone that still supports these scumbags.  Their remaining supporters have to be either hopelessly gullible or else so greedy or power hungary that they just don't care anymore.  I support Bill Clinton and have always thought his impeachment was nothing but an outrageous abuse of power.  However, if he had done half the underhanded things that bush-cheney have done, I would have been marching in the streets to impeach him.
