Timothy M. Kaine
Lieutenant Governor
Richmond, Va. Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Timothy M. Kaine, AB ’79, has dedicated his career to advancing equality for all persons. Since taking oath in 2001, he has promoted educational funding reforms, worked to establish a new public university and expanded housing opportunities for Virginians with disabilities. He began his career as a civil rights attorney mainly fighting against housing discrimination. He won the largest fair housing verdict in American history and one of the largest verdicts ever in a civil rights case, which resulted in a $100 million verdict and sweeping changes in the way homeowners insurance is issued so that minority neighborhoods can be treated fairly. He received Lawyer of the Year awards from the Richmond Bar Association in 1996, the National Fair Housing Alliance in 1999 and Trial Lawyers for Public Justice in 1999. As mayor of Richmond, he received the Innovation in Law Enforcement Award in 2000 from the International Association of Chiefs of Police for his work on Project Exile, a tough program that slashed gun violence in his city. He is an MU Alumni Association member. Kaine and his wife, Anne B. Holton, have three children: Nat, Woody and Annella.
