According to a press release by Rep. Jim Moran's office, the FY-08 Interior Appropriations bill includes some great news on the environmental front:

*"$30 million for the EPA?s Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program"

*"Continues a moratorium on oil and gas drilling off-shore of the East and West U.S. coastlines" (YES!!!)

*"A study of the health effects of trona, a naturally found mineral used by Mirant?s Potomac River in its pollution mitigation strategy.  The only studies to date were conducted by industry and have determined that among a list of potential health hazards, repeated exposure can cause silicosis (a progressive lung disease) and possibly cancer..."

*"$700,000 for the Four Mile Run project, a joint venture with the City of Alexandria and Arlington County to transform the current urbanized cement stream channel into a natural stream that can be used for wildlife habitat and local recreation."

Great work by Jim Moran for the environment!  Next step, a House bill that cranks up vehilce fuel economy standards, followed by one that slashes U.S. greenhouse gas emissions 80% or 90% by 2050.

Congrats, Jim (TheGreenMiles - 6/28/2007 3:01:26 PM)
Excellent!  The Four Mile Run project is not only key to revitalizing the waterway, but for the community around it.  Ten years from now, property adjacent to Four Mile Run won't be facing a concrete channel, it'll be facing a restored stream.

We should do that with streams all over Virginia (Lowell - 6/28/2007 3:03:33 PM)
and all over America.

More good stuff from Jim Moran (Lowell - 6/28/2007 8:44:51 PM)

  * $231,000 for Earth Conservation Corps to expand their nationally recognized River of Hope program. The program takes youth from the inner cities and directs their energies towards restoring the local environment.  In doing so they develop career and life skills.  The River Hope program focuses on revamping the Anacostia River in D.C.  It was also responsible for reestablishing the Bald Eagle to the nation?s capitol, which brought recognition from CBS 60 Minutes television show.  To date over 18,000 youth and volunteers have participated in the program.
