...Connolly has recently been quite protective of a real live Republican: Supervisor Joan M. DuBois (R-Dranesville). Despite their partisan differences, DuBois has been a reliable team player for the chairman, voting with him on most key issues, including the June 18 measure to fund the county's share of the Metro rail extension to Dulles International Airport. The plan is unpopular with many of her constituents because the Tysons Corner segment will be above ground, not a tunnel.DuBois is facing a Democratic challenge in the fall from McLean lawyer John W. Foust. As titular head of the county party, Connolly might be expected to push hard for Foust.
But he calls the situation "very delicate."
"I support all Democratic nominees, but I'm not going to be involved in anything negative about Joan," Connolly said.
"She's been a stand-up member of the board," he said, calling her stance on the rail extension "a courageous vote in which she put the county ahead of political imperatives."
On the other hand, Connolly appeared at John Foust's kickoff back in April. Here's an account from one of the attendees:
As head of the Democratic ticket in Fairfax County Chairman Gerry Connolly once again motivates the crowd. Here he strategizes with Fairfax County Democratic Chair Ginny Peters to help John Foust win the Dranesville Supervisor seat.
By the way, the photo above is from the Foust kickoff. Finally, I contacted the Connolly campaign and they replied that Connolly had "announced his support at Johns kickoff and we've been campaigning with them since them."
So where does this leave us? Is there any problem with supporting a Democratic nominee while avoiding criticisms of their Republican opponent? In fairness, it seems to me that this happens all the time (for instance, last year many Dems supported Andy Hurst without attacking Tom Davis). Thoughts?
Sometimes, however, people have personal relationships that they're not willing to cross. Maybe this is one of them.
To be fair this occurs on both sides of the aisle.
A true politicians first priority is always reelection and "new people" gummy up the works.
Unless Foust shows that he is 100% onboard with the Connolly agenda (getting GC elected to Congress in 2 years and amassing the greatest war chest in FX history...thus selling out our residents to large scale development), GC's support of Foust will only be because GC is a Democrat in Name Only.
Once again Connolly is showing that there is only one political party for Fairfax and that is the Connolly Party.
For a man who doesn't like Democratic party infighting you certainly devote a lot of front page articles to that purpose.
As for the issue brought up in the Washington Post article - there is a legitimate question as to where Connolly stands exactly. Note the "delicate" situation comment by Connolly. Gerry may or may not (I don't know) have a good relationship with DuBois, but there shouldn't be any hesitation (or delicacy) for him to go all out for a Democrat who's trying to oust a Republican. If there is a problem he owes Democrats an explanation.
I know that most politicians are full of bull but puhleeeze.
Thanks Gerry for kicking Joan DuBois...what she does not need is your endorsement. She already has enough troubles!
I am surprised that Gerry did not use the phrase, "I need Joan DuBois like he said that he needed Linda Smyth."
Connolly is deathly afraid that the voters of Fairfax will elect someone who will not bow down to him like all the supervisors that "Connolly needs." That is why he went after Charlie Hall.
Give me a break. The way this Board operates we are wasting out time having more than Connolly.....He makes the decisions.
It is a well know fact in the development world that only one vote is needed on any land use application...that is Connolly's. Why do you think that he is sitting on almost a million dollars? It is called "Pay to Play." The developers pay so they get to play. More density, more impacts on the environment and the roadways, more trailers for kids.....on and on. Don't get me started.........
Last summer, Rep. Tom Davis co-wrote a stiff letter to Gov. Timothy M. Kaine warning that switching to an underground route in Tysons could jeopardize $900 million in funding for the first phase of the 23-mile line to Dulles. His warning, written with Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) was instrumental in Kaine's decision in September to reject the tunnel option and stick with an above-ground design. But as community sentiment for going underground began to build, Davis got in front of the parade, donning a pro-tunnel sticker and rallying supporters. The project, with the aerial design, is currently under review by the Federal Transit Administration, and chances for a Tysons tunnel are virtually nil.
Davis revealed last week that he took one last stab at preserving the tunnel option. He said that in February he co-wrote a letter with Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) asking the leadership of House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to ensure that the $900 million be preserved while an adequate review of the tunnel idea could take place.
Davis said the letter, which went to the committee's ranking Republican, Rep. John L. Mica (Fla.), and chairman, Rep. James L. Oberstar (D-Minn), "kind of disappeared along the way."
A committee spokeswoman said the panel doesn't have it. "Our staff has never seen that letter," she said.
So Tom Davis claims that he tried to save the tunnel by writing a letter, but that letter seems to have gotten lost in the mail.
Bull!!!
If that's so, Davis should re-post it as an open letter. Davis was against the tunnle, then for it, then against it, then for it, then against it...
It seems to depend on which group he happens to be addressing at the time.
I smell a RAT!
Someone needs to write a book about the evils of Gerry Two Face/Hypocrite/I'm In It For Me/Do You Get It? Connolly. I am sorry, but this guy is a lowdown nogoodnik. That is my alternative to cursing.
If you are not with Connolly on taking what you can get, then get lost.
We can find a good Democrat to replace Tom Davis. People who want to accept a small-minded petty person will just have to be challenged to do better.
Do we really believe that Connolly is that person?
In the Washington Post article "A Question of Conflict" which exposed a few of Connolly's conflict of interests, Mr. Connolly's final response was:
"I will do exactly as Chairman Davis did"
So why is he better than Davis? Are we so desperate to replace the Republican Davis that we replace him with a clone who happens to have a D next to his name?
Surely we can do better!
