Who Will Take on Tricia?

Who will take on Tricia B. Stall, the arch-conservative and "anti-tax activist" Republican who defeated incumbent Senator Martin E. "Marty" Williams (Mainstream "R") in the Republican primary last Tuesday? According to Hugh Lessig of the Daily Press:
Steven T. Corneliussen, whom the party nominated last week, removed himself today from the ballot for the 1st Senate District, which includes parts of Newport News, Hampton and York County, and all Poquoson.
That leaves two other men in the running: John Miller, a former TV news anchor and House of Delegates candidate, and Ross Mugler, the Hampton commissioner of the revenue.
According to today's Virginia Briefing in the Washington Post, Corneliussen was a "place holder" candidate. He stepped aside once it became clear that Democrats had a real shot at this seat. The Post reports that "Party officials in the 1st District will meet today and are expected to schedule an expedited 'firehouse primary' to choose a new nominee."
This district is a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats as we attempt to win back the four Senate seats we need to take control of that chamber. Stall is FAR outside the mainstream of even Republican politics, having signed a petition expressing support for "ending government involvement in education." Leave planet earth, enter bizarro world. I look forward to the selection of a strong Democrat who can take on Tricia and fight FOR education, not AGAINST it, in Richmond.
P.S. I'm very happy to hear that Stall "does not support secular humanism." What a relief, as we all know that "secular humanism" is sweeping our nation like the Black Plague! (snark)

Who's going to the secular humanism concert this weekend? (TheGreenMiles - 6/21/2007 8:03:39 AM)
Speaking of which, did we ever get a candidate to take on Dave Albo?
By the way, secular humanism is (Lowell - 6/21/2007 8:32:55 AM)
"a philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice, and specifically rejects the supernatural and the spiritual as warrants of moral reflection and decision-making." Horrible, ain't it? So, where's the concert? :)
As far as Dave "Booze" Albo is concerned, it looks like nobody was willing to step up and take him on this year. That's really sad, but it's what happens when citizens aren't willing to get involved in our political process (can't blame 'em in a way, but still...Dave Albo is the result).
Plug for John Miller (code - 6/21/2007 8:56:12 AM)
John is a really awesome guy. In addition to being "a former TV news anchor and House of Delegates candidate" he's also associate director for the Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center at CNU, and he's Vice Chair of both the 1st Congressional Committee the Newport News Dem Committee. He's been working very hard to get democrats elected on the Peninsula, and he deserves our thanks and support.
Plug for Ross Mugler (Silence Dogood - 6/21/2007 10:37:17 AM)
I don't know John Miller but he sounds like a great guy. I do know Ross Mugler and he's also a great potential candidate. As Hampton's Comissioner of the Revenue, he has experience running and winning elections and is a known entity with voters in the area. He's also well known in the local business community and will pull a lot of fiscal conservative/social moderates who had previously supported the more-mainstream Williams and might otherwise hold their noses to vote for Stall.
Lucky (Bill Kuster - 6/21/2007 10:43:13 AM)
We have an abundance of riches with two really strong candidates. It will be good to get them started with their campaigns by having the firehouse primary.
For those of you in NOVALAND, this is a very winnable seat - the people of York, Hampton and Newport News are looking for moderate, sensible leadership.
This race will be as competitive as any of those in Fairfax.
Strong Candidates (lgb30856 - 6/21/2007 3:17:28 PM)
I am encouraged that this seat will go Blue this year.
The Dems have strong candidates and whoever wins the primary we will be there to work hard for him.
This is a positive pick up and will help Virginia turn blue.

Plug for Steve Corneliussen (Newport News Dem - 6/21/2007 8:48:47 PM)
Steve was our candidate to take on Marty Williams. He only became "placeholder" when the GOP decided to go aver the cliff and nominate Stall.
Steve was prepared and ready to carry the battle to Marty Williams had he prevailed.
Thanks an Kudos to Steve for stepping up ad offering his services.
sorry (Newport News Dem - 6/21/2007 8:50:28 PM)
