Hillary Clinton, "You and I"

The results from Hillary Clinton's "campaign song contest" are in, and the winner is..."You and I" by Celine Dion.  Just a few quick comments on this choice.

1. I hate Celine Dion. H-A-T-E. Seriously, the sound of Dion's hyper/pseudo-"emotional" histrionics and soulless soaring saccharine makes me want to barf.  After listening to "You and I," I found myself hoping that it was a bad joke, that the Clinton campaign actually had picked "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, the song that appears in her excellent Sopranos' spoof music video with Bubba.  Not that "Don't Stop Believing" is a classic or anything, but it's The Beatles compared to Celine Dion's "You and I," the Clinton campaign's new song.  Argh.

2. What on earth do the lyrics to "You and I" have to do with anything?  I guess the message is that if we elect Hillary as President, the following will happen to America, you and I:

Higher than the clouds
We'll sail across the sky
So come with me
And you will feel
That we're soaring
That we're floating up so high
Cause you and I were meant to fly

I can just hear Hillary Clinton's inauguration speech right now: "My fellow Americans, after 8 long years of George W. Bush and the Republicans, get ready to sail across the sky, cuz we're soaring now!"  Ha.

3. Sorry, but nothing can top the Webb for Senate theme song, Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down."  Call me weird, but I STILL get goosebumps when I hear the opening strains of that song.  What a perfect fit to the candidate, "won't back down" Webb.  In contrast, Celine Dion's "You and I" means...what exactly about the candidate?  That it's just Hillary, "you and I" (and Celine Dion) takin' on the terrorists or global warming or something?  Alright, let's go git 'em!

4. Did I mention how much I hate Celine Dion?  I mean, the thought of hearing this "You and I" monstrosity for the next 16 months, if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, is almost enough to make me pick another candidate.  Of course, the other candidates haven't had THEIR song contests yet, so who knows.  But it's hard to imagine Obama or Edwards picking anything more annoying than "You and I."  Just a suggestion: Sen. Edwards, please doesn't pick "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond, another godawful song that makes me queasy.  And Sen. Obama, you might want to avoid "Ebony and Ivory" by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. :)

Oh, Good Grief! (K - 6/20/2007 7:44:55 AM)
If Hillary's campaign people had overridden the vote and selected some other song, Hillary bashers would have attacked her for not letting "the people" vote. So her campaign let the vote proceed and, well, Hillary bashers are attacking her for getting stuck with a Celine Dion song.

Attack Hillary on issues, if you wish, but cut the crap otherwise.

If you couldn't tell, this diary was (Lowell - 6/20/2007 8:13:44 AM)
almost pure snark.  Honestly, I couldn't give a crap what song Hillary Clinton chooses.  But I DO hate Celine Dion. Sorry to all you Celine Dion fans out there, but the woman's songs simply make me want to retch.  Excelletn Sopranos parody, though! :)

I concur (phriendlyjaime - 6/20/2007 9:13:43 AM)
Celine Dion is awful, and this was a horrible choice by the Clinton camp.

this really says something (Jambon - 6/20/2007 12:43:51 PM)
about the judgment and musical taste of Hillary's supporters.

who was the runner up?  Michael Bolton?  Yanni?

I'll bet she loses Iowa just for picking this song!

Yikes!! (ub40fan - 6/20/2007 7:51:41 AM)
You hit the nail on the head Lowell .... it is SOUL-LESS. But then I think Hilary is a SOUL Less, polarizing politician that will likely lead the Democratic Party to defeat should she become the nominee.

We don't retro-leadership ... we need new and renewing leadership. Give me Obama!

You and I... (yawn) (Hugo Estrada - 6/20/2007 8:16:05 AM)
This is one boring, uninspiring song for a political campaign. Fine if you are in love, but not something to rally and inspire people about the future.

P.S. "Sweet Caroline" is a BEAUTIFUL song ;)

Campaign Songs (LovellReiley - 6/20/2007 8:52:02 AM)
I still like Viola Baskerville's campaign song from the Lt. Governor's primary ... Get on Your Feet by Gloria Estefan.

http://www.lyricsdep...

It's action oriented, upbeat ....

Would it be politically incorrect for Richardson (or another candidate) to pick a song by a Latina?  Especially one who is an immigrant?

You can buy the album and listen to all the presidential campaign songs up to 1996, here http://music.msn.com...

For all you Webb guys ... I Won't Back Down was one of the three songs used as presidential campaign songs by George Bush in 2000 ... Do you think Webb knew that?  Was there a subliminal message there?  Just asking.

I agree with Lowell's snarks. (Tom Counts - 6/20/2007 9:23:12 AM)
Even if the Hillary campaign had ended up with a song and singer closer to Hillary's campaign messages, I think the decision to even have a contest in the first place is so irrelevant that it makes me wonder why Hillary would hire a campaign manager who would even think of such a silly stunt. Bad decision by Hillary.

I attended the Edwards "Small Change for a Big Change event last evening. What a stark contrast to this (hopefully one-time) bit of Hillary campaign silliness. By comparison, Edwards stays on message and I think improves delivery of his message every time he speaks. I also think that's one of the most important things that Edwards and Obama have in common.

Really? (TheGreenMiles - 6/20/2007 8:54:28 AM)
Celine Dion?  Has Hillary Clinton decided she doesn't want to be president and this is her way of telling us?

The "Big Dog" served carrots (hereinva - 6/20/2007 9:23:54 AM)
The "Bill and Hill" show clip was hysterical...

not certain if I can sit through another Celine Dion song...OH NO !!!!

I loved the "onion rings" comment by Bubba (Lowell - 6/20/2007 9:30:17 AM)
Poor Bill, forced to eat carrot sticks after years doing his Homer Simpson imitation in Fast Food Nation.  What next, no more bodacious bimbos with big hair?  Ha.

So sad (Silence Dogood - 6/20/2007 9:33:11 AM)
I'm disappointed that my failed write-in campaign didn't work.  We should campaign to one song, and one song only: 'lady humps' by the Black Eyed Peas.  "'Whatchya gonna do with all that junk, all that junk inside that trunk?' 'Imma gonna get get get you drunk, on my lovely lady humps...'"

Who voted for that song? (Andrea Chamblee - 6/20/2007 12:44:53 PM)
Either
(a) Hillary is wayyyyyy more popular with middle aged ladies then the polls suggest, or
(b) Republicans flooded the voting box again.

I did love the Sopranos episode, though.

Her music (Jambon - 6/20/2007 1:32:24 PM)
makes my head want to EXPLODE!

It's already Clinton 2.0 to begin with (DukieDem - 6/20/2007 1:55:48 PM)
Why she didn't steal Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow from Bill is beyond me...

How Canadian of her? (Todd Smyth - 6/20/2007 3:47:52 PM)
Rural Poll: "Democrat Hillary Clinton rated as unpopular as illegal immigrants."

Best spin I can do (Quizzical - 6/20/2007 7:04:48 PM)
The song may say something about campaigning itself, and Hilary's motivation to do it.

From Air Canada to Air Force One? (Kindler - 6/21/2007 9:09:07 PM)
NPR reported that Celine Dion sung this song for an Air Canada commercial (if you look at the words, it kinda makes sense).
