Guns at George Mason

Today's Post had an article about efforts to allow concealed weapons on the George Mason campus:

Andrew Dysart, who heads George Mason University Students for Concealed Carry, said the group aims to overturn a university policy that prohibits students and faculty members from carrying firearms on campus. About 45 students have signed up since organizers began pulling the group together in late April, he said.

Dysart apparently believes we would all be safer with more guns.  Remember the massacre at Virginia Tech?  Probably wouldn't have happened if more students carried guns:  "But Dysart and other gun rights advocates said the killer might have been stopped if a student or faculty member had been armed that day."

If he is successful, just imagine future heated discussions between students.  Wouldn?t it be fun to see one of them pull a gun out of his coat?  That would settle that argument PDQ!  And those faculty members, boy, wouldn't they think twice before they handed you an "F" paper!

There is no reason to stop with students at GM.  Why not overthrow the ban on concealed weapons being taken into Redskins stadium?  Think how much more interesting the fights between drunks would be.  Imagine the Redskins-Cowboys game, when things get hot.  No more calling someone's mother a nasty name, just pull out that 45 and blast away.  We'll show those Cowboy fans a thing or two about self-defense.

As a GMU Student (pitin - 6/14/2007 3:58:22 PM)
just wanted to say this is going nowhere (I sincerely hope to god).

45 students out of 30,000+ is nothing.  This is a front group for the Citizens Defense League and everyone on campus thinks they are a joke.  There are more people in a facebook group (all self-organized and joined organically) than in this astro-turf front for gun nuts.

Well, the gun-rights guys didn't get a very good welcome (LAS - 6/14/2007 11:42:09 PM)
at the Governor's commission on Monday, that's for sure.

And the guy from the Citizens Defense League or whatever it's called tried to pass himself off as a family member of a victim? That was way uncool.

More concealed weapons won't help (mkfox - 6/14/2007 7:48:30 PM)
Even if concealed weapons had been permitted at Tech, that doesn't mean anyone in Norris Hall would've had one or been able to stop the gunman. Cho was mentally ill, suicidal and planned the rampage for some time so it certainly wouldn't have been a deterrant. And if the SWAT team barged in and saw multiple people with guns? The death toll would have been 34, 35, 36 ...  Besides, even if concealed weapons had been allowed and the outcome had been the same, then NRA and VCDL would say teachers/professors MUST be armed.

Concealed weapons at FedEx Field? Brilliant! Especially in a crowded place full of gameday emotions that serves booze, but like ya said, it'll keep those Cowboy fans in line!

Glad to hear there's little support for this at GMU.
