Also Barker, Simmons, and that RINO Joannou are looking strong with 90+% reporting.

Republicans are here.

[UPDATE : RK Endorsed Del. Bowling is pulling away as well with 88+% reporting]

[UPDATE : Morrissey is pulling away too for McEachin's old delegate seat with 96+% reporting]

[UPDATE : Congrats to Rex Simmons, who has beaten RK endorsed Morris Meyer.  Also, McEachin's win is sealed with 100% reporting.  Lambert is the final casualty of the George Allen era.]

[UPDATE : Morrissey wins.]

[UPDATE : O'Leary crushed James for Arlington Treasurer.]

[UPDATE : George Barker wins as well.]

I live out of state (blue south - 6/12/2007 9:06:29 PM)
so I can say this; its too bad Hall was lied about.  A little bit of honesty from his opponent and he would have won.

DINOs who vote against progress should be voted out no matter where they live.  I hope Hall stays in politics, voices like his are needed in every state and city in this country.

Benedict Arnold Lambert Goes Down! (Kindler - 6/12/2007 9:27:36 PM)
Today's lesson:

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger
And...

(wait for it...)

YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM!

A great night for a very deserving candidate....George Barker (SaveElmer - 6/12/2007 10:49:47 PM)
Not only did he show the energy, drive and persuasiveness many claimed only his opponent had, he showed it in spades...with a 60-40 result. Jay O'Brien is in serious trouble, because he is going to be opposed by a serious candidate!!!!

Through the wisdom of the voters in the 39th district, we are one step closer to returning the state senate to Democratic hands this November!!!!

Charlie Hall ran a good race (Indievoter - 6/13/2007 12:42:00 AM)
and I'm very sorry to see the votes didn't fall his way. Do we take from this that honesty and integrity and a campaign of issues can't succeed against their opposites? We may need to reflect on this later. Right now it is just too sad to contemplate the answer.

Mr. Hall, you deserve thanks and admiration for taking on the challenge and executing it with class. Putting yourself in the public light can't always have been easy. Thanks for believing in good government enough to stand up for it.

Shakespeare knows Fairfax. (Lee Diamond - 6/13/2007 1:10:10 AM)
Fairfax Democrats are not unified because the dominant players have other priorities.  I think I am going to save the mailers and I am going to save the article about the results in Wednesday's Post.

I acknowledged a mistake I made in one of my posts.  I try to be accurate in what I write and state what I honestly believe.  A lot of times people express opinions.  I do that frequently.  I freely admit that I have expressed a lot of opinions about local politicians that I cannot prove, at least from a technical standpoint.  If you state something as fact, however, you'd better be able to prove it.

I take the things politicians have said and written (in the mailers) seriously.  They are going to be accountable for their statements.

The Washington Post is clueless (Jambon - 6/13/2007 1:45:33 AM)
get a load of this...

Locally, incumbent Linda Q. Smyth defeated challenger Charles W. Hall in the Democratic primary for Fairfax supervisor from the Providence district. Smyth's victory signals voter satisfaction not only with her leadership on such issues as traffic and growth, but also with that of her political mentor, board Chairman Gerald E. Connolly (D).

ok, so the incumbent wins by 311 votes to a challenger with no political experience, no money, and who jumped in the race like 2 months ago and that signals "voter satisfaction with her leadership"?!?!

I don't know what Amy Gardner at the Post is smoking but can she please share it with the rest of us?  I guess she just recycles whatever the "Gerry Machine" spits out...

That whole article is extremely poor (novamiddleman - 6/13/2007 7:15:12 AM)
Its barely even an opinion piece let alone news

I couldn't find one paragraph that didn't have something wrong with it

Jamebone I thought the prior sentence was even worse

"Hall, a former Washington Post editor, stirred controversy within Fairfax County's Democratic organization by running as a Democrat, yet seeking campaign advice from Connolly's leading political rival, U.S. Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.)."

Stirred controversy??? Are you serious???  Did you actually do ANY research for this article.  I guess when Connolly meets with Davis its normal right?

The opening paragraph shows how poor the entire article is

"Conservative Republican challengers prevailed against moderate incumbents in key legislative primary elections across Virginia yesterday, setting the stage for a bruising fall election in which Democrats will try to take over the GOP-controlled state Senate by capturing the political middle."

ok um if you say so so (not) if you call 2 races a landslide and dems capturing the political middle um in the actual competitive senate races both candidates are trying to capture the middle.

VCAP gets press while only actually winning one competitive race

I could go on and on but its not worth my time to comment on this "journalisim" and I use the term very loosely.

one last thing (novamiddleman - 6/13/2007 7:20:30 AM)
Connlly actually said this

"There was a backlash among Democratic voters to the involvement of Republicans in Hall's campaign," Connolly said. "I think that had a very strong impact on primary voters. You want to run as a Republican and talk to the congressman, be our guest. But to actually seek his counsel was clearly unwelcome."

All I can say is wow.  Does this guy have no shame at all.

Hanger hangs in (kestrel9000 - 6/13/2007 5:22:34 AM)
and the SWACs are not happy.

All in (H)all (Providence Voter - 6/13/2007 8:37:30 AM)
All in all, considering Linda outspent Charlie 20:1; had the Democratic "machine" behind her, and "swiftboated" Charlie for being a Republican plant, I didn't exactly consider a win by only 300 votes a vindication...

Charlie's limited resources and time in the race (just a couple of months) mean't that he could only concentrate on a few precincts...all of which went to him on a 2:1 margin.

Personally, I think that sends a message that Gerry should listen to.

How much do you want to bet... (Lowell - 6/13/2007 8:44:11 AM)
...that Connolly will NOT listen to this message?  I'll even give you good odds. :)

Lowell (Providence Voter - 6/13/2007 9:28:03 AM)
Unfortunately, I think you are right so I won't bet you. But please let me dream.  I'm depressed.

True class, or lack thereof, was exposed in the Providence Primary (Hiker Joe - 6/13/2007 10:15:57 AM)
And it wasn't Smyth or Connolly. Charlie Hall conducted himself with dignity and class and ran a clean grassroots campaign. He touched literally thousands of everyday people with a message that reflected the real core values of the Democratic Party. And dare I say that some of these people were Republican-leaning voters?

There is little that is more important, more basic, to the Democratic Party than bringing in new people from all parts of the political spectrum, as Charlie's campaign did.

RK and Rex Simmons (Jim K. - 6/13/2007 10:35:51 PM)
I admire RK, who endorsed Morris Meyer in the primary contest for the 40th House District, for its "congrats" to Meyer's opponent, Rex Simmons, for his primary victory. Simmons, much like ex-Governor Warner, does not come across as an edgy Democrat, and this may be the reason that RK did not endorse him.  Just speculation.  But Simmons' style makes him well-suited to take on Republican incumbant Tim Hugo in the general election.  More than Meyer, I think, Simmons can appeal to Independents as well as Democrats, and such a broad appeal will be needed to unseat Hugo in a district that was drawn to be a Republican district.
