"Positive Campaign?"

First, read this, "Agreement of Candidates to Run Positive Campaigns, House of Delegates, 40th District."  The agreement was made between Rex Simmons and Morris Meyer, two Democrats seeking the party's nomination for that seat.  Among other things, the agreement stipulates that "[w]e will not produce any campaign literature, advertisement, or other material that distorts or falsifies the facts regarding our opponents."

Sounds good, right?  Well, now look at this!

Comparing Morris Meyer to George W. Bush just because Meyer used to live in Texas?  What's next, a flyer comparing the Dixie Chicks to Bush?  All kidding aside, I'm appalled that Rex Simmons has broken his agreement with Morris Meyer to run a "positive campaign."  The bottom line is that this is yet another reason to support Morris Meyer, who has run a positive campaign as he agreed to do, and who Raising Kaine has endorsed for the nomination in the 40th House of Delegates district.  Go Morris!

Comparing a Democrat to Bush ... (Rob - 6/9/2007 4:50:03 PM)
... is the lowest of the low!

No kidding... (Lowell - 6/9/2007 5:39:30 PM)
...it's about as nasty as you can get.

Tell me about it (Joshua Ly - 6/9/2007 5:58:55 PM)
Morris Meyer's campaign has been based on issues and the needs of the 40th district, while Rex's mail piece and campaign has come down to pointing out that he has lived longer in the district than Morris and that he would know what is needed here. It's astonishing that Rex's piece does not lay out what he will do for those living in the 40th, and instead equates a fellow Democrat to George Bush.

Morris (seamusotoole - 6/9/2007 6:03:56 PM)
Frankly, I'm appalled that this piece got sent to voters living in the 40th District.  If I recall, Hugo moved to the 40th District to run for Delegate.  This is an area filled with people from other parts of the U.S.  The worst part of this is that the two candidates agreed there would be no negative campaigning and it would be kept positive.
The piece was totally uncalled for.  For Morris to be compared to Bush is totally unfair when the man ran for office in Texas against one of DeLay's cronies and fought against Republicans tooth and nail.  I'm really disappointed as the Chairman of Sully District that this occurred so close to the Democratic Primary or for that matter occurred at all.

Thanks, Mary Lee. (Lowell - 6/9/2007 7:55:08 PM)
I completely agree that this is VERY disappointing.  Looks like RK made the right choice in endorsing Morris Meyer.

What the hell is going on? (Eric - 6/9/2007 6:11:34 PM)
That's the second faulty Republican comparison in as many weeks.

While, IMO, this isn't as bad as the Smyth/Connolly attack on Charlie, it's still the absolute wrong message we Democrats should be sending: we need to lie in order to win an election.

Who the hell is going to trust our party if we keep pulling this crap?

It's one thing to play hard in politics - that's the nature of the game.  "Loose interpretations" of facts/statements/positions are commonplace and to be expected.  But these two recent attacks have crossed that line and can not be considered a "loose interpretation".  They are outright lies designed to trick the voters.

And that's the real problem.  These campaigns are lying, not just to us, but to the voters.  And if the voters get wise to this it can only the Republicans (who will gladly accept our free gift).  We already have an uphill battle to turn the state from Red to Purple to Blue.  It'll never happen if the voters don't trust us.

"help" (Eric - 6/9/2007 6:15:07 PM)
...it can only help the Republicans...

I'm seeing so much red I didn't do a good job of proofreading my own comment.

Isn't Meyer trained in environmental issues? (Andrea Chamblee - 6/9/2007 6:44:09 PM)
I rememeber hearing that Meyer is a "graduate" of the "Inconvenient Truth" school.  Doesn't that make him, well, first, smarter then Bush will ever be; second, "up to speed" on traffic, congestion, and smog solutions?! This is a huge issue for our entire Metro area.

Yes, he took Al Gore's training. (Lowell - 6/9/2007 7:56:51 PM)
A student of Al Gore's in the Virginia House of Delegates working on environmental issues?  Sounds like a plan to me! :)

Not just a student... (pitin - 6/9/2007 8:14:50 PM)
But a trained presenter having given the "Al Gore" power point presentation all over the country including George Mason Univ.

"if indeed?" (pitin - 6/10/2007 7:01:15 PM)
Perhaps you should call your boy Rex or his CM Missy, it has a very nice "paid for and authorized" box on it, and he was amateur enough to include a "vote for rex" on the back...not classy.

SInce that was not included on the scan that I saw... (SaveElmer - 6/10/2007 10:18:17 PM)
I included the caveat...

And the snarky attitude is not required...
