A story has broken within the last few days regarding a decision by the Marine Corps to charge some Marine anti-war veterans and members of Iraq Veterans Against the War with unlawful wearing of uniforms for political purposes and assorted other offenses. The Marines have all done their time and been honorably discharged, but they are part of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) and could be subject to callup at some future date as part of the Bush Administration's backdoor draft. Wonkette calls Adam Kokesh "America's Favorite Marine" and has been on this story for several days.
The root of the problem was the participation of the Marine veterans in several anti-war demonstrations, the chief one being a mock patrol done on Capitol Hill to dramatize the traumatic effects of patrolling Iraqi streets on both our military and the Iraqi people. Mr. Kokesh and his fellow demonstrators wore portions of their uniforms for this exercise and pretended to be holding M-16s.
