Steve Gilliard, 1966-2007It is with tremendous sadness that we must convey the news that Steve Gilliard, editor and publisher of The News Blog (www.thenewsblog.net), passed away early this morning. He was 41.
To those who have come to trust The News Blog and its insightful, brash and unapologetic editorial tone, we have Steve to thank from the bottom of our hearts. Steve helped lead many discussions that mattered to all of us, and he tackled subjects and interest categories where others feared to tread.
We will post more information as it becomes available to us.
Please keep Steve's friends and family in your thoughts and prayers.
Steve meant so much to us. We will miss him terribly.

Over at Daily Kos, Meteor Blades has these thoughts:
Steve Gilliard was one of the original "Front Pagers" at Daily Kos before he started his own very well-received blog. Hard-nosed, independent, acerbic, Steve often pissed off the same readers he wowed with his take-no-prisoners style. We too will miss him terribly. Our condolences to his kin and his on-line family.
By the way, Steve had a Virginia connection. Remember this?
Steve's death, especially at such a young age, is a major loss for the entire progressive blogosphere. Our condolences to Steve's friends, family, readers, and the entire News Blog team.
May he rest in peace. I will miss him.
I miss Steve too.
I wish you'd be so fair all the time.
Sean
Steve was a big personality, and it was clear he needed his own stage. And he got it with the News Blog, which he soon built into a full-time gig, still a rarity among bloggers. It was one of three sites I religiously checked more than three times a day.If you knew Steve only from his blog, you'd think he was a pit bull. He was blunt, loud, aggressive, unafraid, and took no prisoners.
But you'd meet him in life, and he was the exact opposite. He was soft-spoken, shy, modest, calm, friendly, and -- this was the most surprising to me -- gentle.
I never would've gotten that from his writings. But that's what he was.
Markos also credits Steve Gilliard with playing a huge role in jump-starting Daily Kos. Obviously, this man lived a consequential, if all too short, life.
