And after yesterday's reception in Oakton, Virginia she almost has done it. As teacherken wrote about earlier. Friends of the Edwards family held a private reception for Elizabeth Edwards which I luckily was invited to because my friend's parents were co-hosting the event.
She is an amazing woman, to be going through what she is right now and would it would appear a full campaign swing for her husband John shows her dedication and belief in him and his campaign for President.
As she was speaking so eloquently during a short Question & Answer session with the guests in this hot summer day in Virginia my friend and I couldn't help but say that even though we both don't support John Edwards for President we couldn't agree more that she is the greatest candidates wife we could think of since Jackie Kennedy.
At the end of the questions, we both asked her if she needed us to work on any future campaign of her own. She laughed and smiled, and the guests got a good kick out of it.
My friends mom, had me hand out flowers to the women at the end of the event, as I made my way around I made sure I gave Elizabeth more than just one rose. I gave the roses to her (pink, yellow, & red) and landed a very nice kiss on her cheek winking at her and saying "Don't tell John".
I didn't want to ask her policy questions ask most of the guests did out of the utmost respect for her. As many of you may or may not know I have not been a fan of John Edwards, but seeing Elizabeth again since the DNC Winter Meeting earlier this year I got a sense of who's behind the candidate.
A great woman, and behind every great man is a great woman.
We talked about her kids, apparently they were just in a wedding. They are doing great. We talked about my service in the Navy, and she thanked me and said that she wasn't going to let John forget about her father's lifelong service in uniform to this country. She stressed how important those who serve and our veterans are dear to her.
During the event she did talk about strategy. Indicating that her husband's lead in Iowa should also constitute a Nevada victory as well. She said and I quote, "Once the train gets moving, it's hard to stop it".
I wished her luck, as I told her candidly that I didn't support John's campaign because I was an Iraq Veteran she got into as I indicated prior how important the military and veterans were to her.
She left but didn't leave without pointing to my friend's mom, the co-host of the reception and tell her, "We have to work on him(me), we got to bring him onboard".
She has my support always, and quite frankly right now although I have publicly stated I support Obama, I haven't officially endorsed any candidate in the 2008 Presidential race other than Wes Clark.
It would appear that I don't have an official candidate running. I still am holding out hope for Clark and Gore, but John Edwards in my opinion would make a fine President, with a great first lady behind him.
Best of luck to the campaign.
By all accounts, it was a good event--small enough so you all had a chance to really meet EE and get a sense of who she really is. I'm a bit jealous because so far I've only seen her from a far, but everyone I know who has met her has come away with a similar sense of appreciation.
Boy, she was dead-on!
I for one don't believe or take seriously anything he says at all. It is obvious he is trying to kill the Edwards campaign because Edwards intends to do more than a 18 state strategy. That kills any chance whatsoever that he will get any of those big market media buy bucks.
Also, anyone who would trash former clients in this manner is a low class piece of shit. Think of how you feel about people who are friends one day then go around and talk shit about them the next.
I know this is a rant but I have let this piece of shit book that Shrum wrote get a bit under my skin.
I look forward to being on the same side as you in the general election, whoever the candidate is.
And by the way, I'm still looking for some Montoya wine.
She and my wife, who is a Fairfax County teacher, spent quite some time discussing the problems with "No Child Left Behind" and the general frustrations with raising teenagers.
I had the chance to meet John Edwards a year ago when he attended a fundraiser for Andy Hurst. I admire his vision of what America means and how we can lead by example instead of by intimidation. It has been an honor to meet both of the Edwards.
