The GOP nominee for the seat, Richard Stuart, introduced himself to his fellow Republicans recently. He claims that he really is a conservative, despite the fact that he's John Chichester's hand-picked successor. Stuart also said, "Make no mistake, Al Pollard is as liberal as they come." Which of course explains why Mr. Stuart donated money in the past to Democrats like fmr. Gov. Mark Warner and fmr. Delegate....Albert Pollard(!). Uh, yeah.... I know all my conservative Republican friends just loooove giving money to liberal Democrats.
(The Stafford GOP blog even posted a Free-Lance Star article calling Stuart the most moderate of the Republican candidates for the seat, and said that "Pollard is no liberal either; he has run, and won, as a conservative Democrat.")
From the comments: The 6:00pm start time is from a flyer the campaign sent around. It also says to call Crystal with questions at 540-446-0800.
A few years ago when I lived in North Carolina we had a Republican U.S. Senator running for re-election named Lauch Faircloth. He claimed he really wasn't all THAT conservative despite being the hand-picked successor of Jesse Helms. The Democrats nominated some guy named Edwards who always had a smile on his face and could campaign his butt off. The rest, as they say, is history.
For their new Chair, the Stafford Co. GOP elected Susan Stimpson, who ran Jon Myers' unsuccessful Senate run. Despite getting the endorsement of nearly every local elected official, Myers came in a rather distant third out of four candidates in the recent "firehouse" GOP primary for the 28th district Senate seat. Supposedly there are 35,000 Republican or Republican-leaning voters in Stafford County and Myers came up with a whopping 446 votes. Word is, Myers ripping-off Jim Webb's camoflauge truck was her idea too.
Stimpson shouldn't be underestimated though. She's described by a fellow Republican as feisty and aggressive, but also very creative and very smart. She's also worked for Elizabeth Dole in the past, so hopefully she'll lead Stafford Republicans the way Liddy Dole ran the NRSC in the last congress.
It's a great line for deflecting criticism during debates or in the press, too. "Really? I'm disappointed to hear you say that, Rich--you didn't think I was too liberal for this district back when you were donating money to my campaign, I can't understand why you'd come out and say such a thing now."
Stuart will be hard-pressed to find a way to go negative during this campaign, and I *hope* unaffiliated Republicans try and get nasty; it just gives Pollard another excuse to say "Even my opponent thinks I'm a great legislator to pick to represent this area in Richmond."
When I said weeks ago that the race would come down to Stuart & Van Hoy, a Myers supporter came whining. And who finished 1st and 2nd? Boo hoo.
Go back to the Free Republic with the rest of the Hitler Youth. They miss you.
