Post Editorial: McDonnell Protects "Gun Scofflaws"

I haven't agreed much with the Washington Post recently, but I've got to say they nailed it with this editorial: "Protecting Gun Scofflaws: Virginia's attorney general loses sight of the real enemy."

The real enemy, of course, should be "gun-dealing scofflaws" - "gun store owners who turn a blind eye to the law's niceties to make a buck, even if that means supplying criminals with lethal weapons."  Instead, McDonnell is angry at hard-working law enforcement officials trying to enforce gun laws already on the books by conducting "sting" operations.

Why would Bob McDonnell coddle the criminals and harass the police?  Isn't the Virginia Attorney General's job to protect the law-abiding citizens (gun owners and sellers included) of Virginia, not those who are breaking the law?  Perhaps McDonnell's fine legal education at Regent University - one of the worst law schools in the country, unaccredted and not even approved by the ABA when he enrolled - has something to do with this pathetic excuse for legal reasoning?

P.S.  Another possibility: McDonnell is determined to "[give] legitimate gun owners and shooters a bad name?"  Or maybe he's just afraid of people who Mayor Bloomberg (R) calls "sick," or who Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis (R) says are "mean-spirited" and "won't listen or reason?"

Just a couple of facts:  The new law does not hinder law enforcement.  The behavior in question was undertaken by Michael Bloomberg in an extralegal fashion.  Law enforcement was NOT involved.  Bloomberg conspired to violate Federal gun laws (felonies) and existing Virginia gun laws (felonies).  Bloomberg is currently under investigation for said gun law violations.

If Mayor Bloomberg has legitimate law enforcement concerns, he should work through the Governor's office and with Federal agencies, some of whose ongoing investigations he has possibly jeopardized.

ATF Probing Mayor Bloomberg's 'Rogue Gun Sting'
http://www.cnsnews.c...

"The federal government confirms it is investigating New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's sting operation against gun dealers in five states."

Enforce the law, jail Bloomberg.

I presume you don't like Rudy Giuliani either (Lowell - 5/13/2007 9:25:44 AM)
Since his administration "sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and whose police commissioner, Howard Safir, proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly 'safety' inspections."

Or Mitt Romney:

In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons

Just wondering.

Reeeaallly? (Susan P. - 5/13/2007 3:22:48 PM)
Maybe if Mayor Bloomberg had some confidence that Virginia or the feds were enforcing the law, he wouldn't have felt it necessary to act "in an extralegal fashion."  Why wasn't this sting arranged by the Virginia Attorney General's Office or the state police or the feds?  (Hint: because they're supporting those who are on the wrong side of the law.) When McDonnell learned of the sting, his kneejerk reaction was to protect those who illegally sell to gunrunners.  It is often embarrassing, truly embarrassing, to be from Virginia, and realize how the rest of the nation views us.

Cousin Brucie Is Correct (MohawkOV1D - 5/13/2007 8:46:14 PM)
NY City has no federal authority in Virginia, and as much as I dislike the AG, he is correct to push back against NewYorks extra-legal insurgency into Virginia.

To my knowledge, Virgina has a first rate State Police Agency (they run the background checks) and the gun dealers that I know have the BATFE in their shop on a weekly basis reviewing form 4473's.

Bloomberg and Co. broke VA law by setting up straw purchases.  They broke the law, not that that matters to the "anti anything I don't like" crowd.

It is Bloomberg, not the state of VA or the AG, that is on the wrong side of VA law.  So lets recall Kaine, and let NYC elect our next Governor.

Jebus!!!!
