Bush Administration Works to Weaken Climate Change Statement

Well, at least the Bush Administration is working hard at SOMETHING! Unfortunately, according to today's Washington Post, it's "to weaken the language of a climate change declaration set to be unveiled at next month's G-8 summit of the world's leading industrial powers."

Among other things, the Bush Administration is trying to strike a proposal before the Group of Eight industrialized nations that "includes a pledge to limit the global temperature rise this century to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as an agreement to reduce worldwide greenhouse gas emissions to 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050."  They are also "to eliminate draft language that says, 'We acknowledge that the U.N. climate process is the appropriate forum for negotiating future global action on climate change.'"  Incredibly, they even oppose "calls for efficiency," apparently believing it must be part of a communist plot, sort of like the one that put fluoride in our water, anal probes in our brains, and black helicopters flying around our country. Or something.

So why would the Bush Administration do this, despite strong evidence that moving to tackle global warming will NOT (repeat: NOT!!!!) hurt the economy?  Perhaps this might help explain it?  Or maybe this?  Just askin'...
