The Richmond vs. Stafford battle lines have clearly been drawn in the GOP race for the open seat in the 28th Senate district. Despite the fact that Jon Myers has been endorsed by every local elected official, outgoing Sen. John Chichester and House Speaker Bill Howell have come up with a candidate of their own at the last minute in former Commonwealth's Attorney Richard Stuart.
Not only has Stuart stated that he is poltically pro-choice and willing to raise taxes, but he's donated to Democrats in the past including Mark Warner and, get this, the Democratic nominee in this race Albert Pollard!
These past statements and actions by Stuart have not detered his campaign from sending out some of the most dishonest mailers to Republican primary voters you will ever see (and that's saying something). They unflinchingly refer to Richard Stuart as a "life-long conservative" who is "100% pro-life" and a "100% low-tax conservative".
You can see for yourself after the flip:

Stick to your side
Its obvious you want anyone but Stuart so your guy will have an easier ride in November
You're entitled to that opinion I suppose (Chris Guy - 5/10/2007 9:46:12 PM)
Just like I'm entitled to the opinion that Pollard will beat whoever the nominee is.
But it really shouldn't matter since any Republican will be forced to sign a pledge promising to vote for the nominee in November. Totalitarianism! It's grrrrreat!
Novamiddleman...then why are you over here at a Dem blog? (Dianne - 5/11/2007 7:02:46 AM)
Chris Guy gets it right! (oncerednowblue - 5/10/2007 8:28:58 PM)
Kudos to Chris for his important coverage of the 28th Senate District's
firehouse primary...er...Republican Canvass. Be assured, the MSM here in the FXBG area are not covering this important story. At least, not well. So again, thanks Chris! Terrific reporting!
We've learned that Mr. Stuart's campaign is spending several thousands of dollars on direct mail trying to convince mainly 2003 Republican primary voters (of the contest that pitted Sen. Chichester against Mike Rothfeld) to vote for Stuart.
AND THAT COULD BACKFIRE.
While the turnout in 2003 was not overwhelming, Rothfeld's voters were a determined bunch. My guess is that see these mailings,
News coverage of Stuart's double talk (Capt. Coley - 5/17/2007 11:09:41 AM)
The dailies may not have covered it, but is was covered in detail down on the Northern Neck. The Northern Neck News, the Westmoreland News and the Northumberland Echo all ran front page stories on it. Stuart didn't come out looking too spiffy.
