John Warner To Announce Decision in September

See here for more on this story.  If John Warner DOES retire, the next question is whether Mark (not John) will run for Senate.  If he does, I think we can pretty much assume that Democrats will control both U.S. Senate seats from Virginia come 2009.  That will be an incredible turnaround from just over a year ago, when we were represented in the Senate by George Allen and John Warner.  After that, though, the quesitons get trickier, as the Virginia governor's race for 2009 heats up.  If Mark Warner doesn't run for Senate next year, will he run for Governor in 2009?  What will Tom Davis  do if he's locked out of both the U.S. Senate the Governor's mansion?  Also, what will Tim Kaine do when he leaves the governorship after 2009?  And which party will control Congressional redistricting in 2011?

Lots of questions, and they all start with a decision by Senator John Warner in September 2007.  Stay tuned...

Given his paltry fundraising... (Kryndis - 5/9/2007 8:44:27 AM)
... it would seem he's pretty much already decided, no?

Seems like it. (Lowell - 5/9/2007 8:47:04 AM)
Unless we're all completely missing something here, like the fact that John Warner might not need any money to run for re-election?

True, but... (Kryndis - 5/9/2007 12:49:07 PM)
Wouldn't he still collect money to help out other candidates?  It seems rather unusual for a politician to not be collecting money for one thing or another.

I have to think that he knows the landscape on if he runs. That meaning, he knows if he runs, that Mark will not, therefore meaning he would have no real competition or need for money.

Agreed (DanG - 5/9/2007 2:24:38 PM)
He really doesn't need to raise that much money if he decides to run.  And it will be a Presidential year, meaning there will probably be Republican coattails for any Republican candidates.  This is all about whether or not John Warner wants so time to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

September is time to evaluate the surge (Randy Klear - 5/9/2007 3:32:55 PM)
according to the Capitol Hill GOP CW.  I wonder if that is driving Warner's decision, and in which direction.
