Tom Davis April Wrap-Up:

WaPo:  "Rep. Tom Davis, center, with Rep. Henry Waxman, right, practiced his delaying technique."

*  Defending administration officials' ability to lie to Congress.

*  Voting against shareholders right to veto Enron- and Exxon-like CEO sweetheart deals. Jim Webb voted for this bill.

*  Covering up the military's embellishment of the Jessica Lynch rescue, including the military's editing the video so it would look like a scene from "Black Hawk Down."
*  Voting against military readiness in the the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act. Jim Webb voted for this bill.

* Informing Chairman Waxman that by investigating lies and corruption he was "like a highbred horse without a bridle."  Whoa.

According to Center for Media and Democracy:

During last week's hearing before the House Government Oversight Committee, the committee's senior Republican member, Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia, argued in his opening statement that the Lynch rescue was exaggerated by the media, not by the military. It is certainly true that the media did embellish the story, but the story itself was created by the military. No embedded journalist accompanied the raid, and the green night-vision footage of Lynch's rescue was shot by soldiers. As Robert Scheer later noted, "The video was artfully edited by the Pentagon and released as proof that a battle to free Lynch had occurred when it had not."

In fact, Command Central issued the photos and videos on Lynch, and told the press the less-then accurate story of her capture and rescue.

According to Politico:

"[Davis's] remarks coincide with a coordinated assault by Republicans in the House, criticizing Waxman on a range of topics because of his determination to question Rice, one leadership aide said.

Typical Tom Davis (bladerunner - 5/2/2007 6:09:11 PM)
First off Shame on Tom Davis for voting against bringing home the troops. Bad Boy Tommy. And to vote against getting information from Condi Rice. Bad Boy Again. Tom is showing his true colors by sticking with the Right Wing club, The same right wingers who have made one hell of a mess in Iraq. One that has seen 3300 Americans killed just because Bush wanted to play war, cause he missed out while partying in Bama. Oh Tommy do you need the money that bad? Jean Marie Antoinette has plenty of bucks that you've already given her--sort of like Wolfowitz did with his babe. Anyway Tom, never accuse anyone of politiczing something after all the crap you've done. I think they would call it hypocrasy.

Wolfowitz and Davis (Andrea Chamblee - 5/2/2007 8:48:35 PM)
I like that good analogy.  The only difference is, Wolfie got his main squeeze a job with a good salary. Tom Davis got his main squeeze a job at a lobbying/consulting company, AND clients for that company with business before his Oversight committee, AND a political office of her own, AND campaign contributions from the companies vying for the biggest GSA contract ever (Networx), AND a chance to dip into his two PACs, AND money from the RNCC, where she was one of the RNCC's biggest non-Federal recipients when he was chair.

You might say Tom Davis makes Wolfowitz money grab for his girlfriend look like amateur hour.

We need to watch Bechtel (Rebecca - 5/2/2007 10:00:31 PM)
Let's watch how much money Bechtel gives the Davis' campaigns in return for its sole source contract to boondoogle the rail to Tysons contract. Too bad most people don't see behind Davis' mask.

For the Big Dig the company paid off the state Secretary of Transportation to overlook their cost overruns. Let's see who they pay off in Fairfax County.

I've heard tell (libra - 5/3/2007 12:31:22 AM)
on another blog, that Davis is claiming that Warner (John) had told him to start preparing for a senatorial run. So can someone -- pretty please -- really lean on Warner (Mark) to run? 'cause I got so spoiled by having Webb as my senator, I can no longer reconcile myself to having a dickhead representing me. And that's before I even start thinking about  beefing up Dem representation in the Senate to the point where LIEberman will become irrelevant and can be stripped of all his committee plums...

I like that term LIEberman (PM - 5/3/2007 7:56:09 PM)
Andrea, great job.  Everything I know about this Administration suggests it is filled with corruption.

Wolfowitz.  Heh.  Apparently his lawyer was threatening to reveal other sweetheart deals in Wolfie got ousted from the den.  (I would not be surprised if there were tons of similar deals.)

But wait.  Isn't the President of the World Bank supposed to root out corruption, like sweetheart deals.  You mean his attorney is threatening the Bank with Wolfie doing what he's paid for?

I see our local GOP congressmen voted against extending hate crimes protection.

On the subject of corruption (PM - 5/3/2007 8:15:11 PM)
Howling Latina has a great post up about depoliticizing the Dept. of Justice.  http://howlinglatina...
I'm not sure I agree with the specifics of Art Burns' solution (former Reagan AG) but I do with the generalities.  There needs to be bi-partisan leadership at the nation's chief prosecution office.  There's just one revelation after another about the DOJ can of worms, like this one today:

As you know, the Justice Department is now investigating whether former DOJ employee Monica Goodling broke the law by screening DOJ job applicants for party affiliation. Let's not forget that two weeks ago TPMmuckraker's Paul Kiel ran an article on Bradley Schlozman in which a former DOJ employee said on the record that Schlozman had asked him a potential job applicants party affiliation before deciding whether to grant him an interview. That sounds like pretty much exactly the same thing.

To think a friend of mine was bugging me to get involved with the Federalist Society years ago.

And if it's not corruption it's cronyism:  http://thinkprogress...

New HHS deputy secretary is Bush's former debate prepper.

Tevi David Troy's main qualifications: Troy had primary responsibility for debate preparation in President Bush's re-election campaign.
