I applaud Gov. Kaine's strong leadership on this serious issue and it is my fervent hope that yesterday's executive order will help to prevent anyone who is a danger to themselves or others from purchasing a gun.
However, a glaring loophole in state law remains: the `gun show loophole' that allows any individual to buy a firearm at a gun show with no requirement of a background check. As a member of the House of Delegates, I will introduce legislation to close this loophole and work with the Governor and my colleagues in the General Assembly to pass this bill.
My opponent has conclusively demonstrated over the years that he is more interested in listening to the NRA than to his constituents on these serious safety issues where much is at stake.
My opponent Johnny Joannou has enjoyed the strong backing of the National Rifle Association since his election in 1997 and was awarded an A+ rating by the NRA in 2005.
He's had his chance to show badly needed leadership, and he has failed. It's time for a change, and it's time to elect a leader of the 79th House District who will stand up for our principles.
RK picked the right election cycle to start endorsing candidates.
It's unfortunate something like this had to happen to my alma mater (Go Hokies!) before we did something about it. At least Gov. Kaine is doing the right thing! Now let's get Henry Light in there to help him do even more!
