Thanks, Lowell, for reminding us that Bush was really into playing risk in college. Maybe that is the way he cares so little for the loss of life in either side of the war: they are just counters in his global Risk game.
You mean Bush liked the game of Risk? (Lowell - 4/20/2007 11:08:36 AM)
I had never heard that before. I'll have to tell my nephews, who absolutely LOVE that game (yeah, I taught it to 'em). :)
I like the game also (Hugo Estrada - 4/20/2007 11:35:22 AM)
I can't get my wife to play it because she finds it mean-spirited if I try to win I tried playing diplomacy with a few friends, but the game sours all friendships :) I rather play risk.
About Bush and his love of Risk, Maureen Dowd.
"W. always acts like he's upping the ante in a board game where you roll the dice and bet your plastic army divisions on the outcome. This doesn't surprise some of his old classmates at Yale, who remember Junior as the riskiest Risk player of them all, known for dropping by the rooms of friends, especially when they were trying to study for exams, for extended bouts of "The Game of Global Domination.""
I've played both Risk and Diplomacy many times (Lowell - 4/20/2007 12:53:42 PM)
You're right, Diplomacy can ruin friendships. But it's also an amazing game, requiring both diplomatic and strategic skills. Oh, and lots of pizza and beer! :)
Back in college my debate teammates (Catzmaw - 4/20/2007 11:45:59 AM)
and I would play endless games of Risk. I wasn't very good at it. One of my friends had what he called a "nuclear" solution. When things were going badly for him he would suddenly declare a nuclear war and bring his fist down on the table, scattering pieces everywhere. Now you can get a computer version of it. That's how my sons played.
McCain's never ending fall (Hugo Estrada - 4/20/2007 10:54:17 AM)
Well, McCain has successfully made me move from not supporting him to actively opposing him.
Making the tasteless joke is bad enough; his dehumanization of Iranians was over the top.
We are talking about an action that could mean the loss of human life, and McCain thinks it is funny.
If this had been a joke of a foreign prominent politician, we would be enrage at their callousness.
So, not only McCain supports a failed war, but he seeks to start another confrontation with Iran, and finds destroying a country humorous.
Yes, you'd have to think how we'd react if an Iranian leader (PM - 4/20/2007 11:41:25 AM)
sang the same song.
Maybe McCain realizes it's all slipping away.

We did, didn't we? (Detcord - 4/20/2007 12:07:23 PM)
I'd say wiping "Israel off the map" from the Iranian President is pretty much in the same category...

...and, of course, my personal favorites, alhough not "presidential" in stature:
"With God's permission we call on everyone who believes in God ... to comply with His will to kill Americans." - Osama bin Laden
or
"God will destroy America by the hands of the Muslims....God will not give Japan or Europe the honor of bringing down the United States; this is an honor God will bestow upon Muslims." - Louis Farakhan
...although I can't think of a catchy Beach Boys tune to tie them to.
