Wear VT Colors Friday: Maroon and Orange Effect

Tomorrow Today, please join with VT Hokies everywhere in wearing the colors: maroon and/or orange.  It's a simple way to show your support, be a Hokie for a day, and join with us, albeit from a distance,in an official Virginia day of mourning.

Please remember those who lost their lives this past Monday, tomorrow, and into the future.  Treasure your loved ones.  Hold them dear.

Americans "do" crises quite well.  Indeed, the outpouring from everywhere has really sustained us.  There are so many wounded hearts at this moment.  But Virginians, Americans and citizens of  the world are helping to lighten the load.

Beyond crises, what we can do better is more mundane, more day-to-day.  We slide so easily into taking one another, and our blessings, for granted.  Raising Kaine folks don't need to be prodded to make a difference.  That's RK's reason for being and RK bloggers reason for action. But we can find some small way to change ourselves in a positive way toward a better community and country.

I love you all.

I like this idea a lot! (Lowell - 4/19/2007 9:09:03 PM)
It's a great way to show that we are all Hokies, that we are all Virginians, and that we are all human beings spinning around on this crazy planet together.

By the way, I like the maroon and orange idea a MILLION times better than the strange "day of blog silence."  With regard to that, I agree with this and especially this:

What I am about to say intends no disrespect to the many good-intentioned bloggers--including those who are my friends and colleagues--who are participating in the April 30 event. It certainly in no way is meant to diminish the heart-breaking tragedy of these senseless deaths.

But I have to ask, why? Why be silent? What is the point? Why not use this as an opportunity to speak out? To rage against the machine? To stand up for whatever cause you believe in that will reduce human suffering or end violence? Provide better treatment and interventions for the mentally ill? Increase safety on college campuses? Take action against handgun violence? End the war in Iraq? The crisis in Darfur? Any one of the thousand conflagrations that burn around the world?

Or, better yet, get away from the keyboard and actually do something?

It will be business as usual at this blog on Monday, April 30. I won't be silent.

Amen.

I've posted a diary on Daily Kos discussing mental illness and how communities can develop the tools to identify and remove the dangerously mentally ill.  You can find it here:

In the spirit of Ut Prosim, I'm looking for applicable solutions that work. Thanks Y'all!

This column rocks! (Lowell - 4/20/2007 9:27:57 AM)
Great job, Bubby.

I'll be thinking about VT all day.  And a long time thereafter.

Yes, Bubba -- let's turn this into something positive.  That's what we owe these kids.

Today we are all Hokies ...

Today we are all Hokies

Being the best Hokie I can (Matusleo - 4/20/2007 3:03:59 PM)
I no longer have any orange and maroon outfits.  I did my best with my darkest shade of red shirt and my darkest gold tie.  I wish I could be there with everyone.  I miss you terribly.
