CNN now reporting "20 fatalities" (Jambon - 4/16/2007 12:21:36 PM)
and that the shooter is dead. I can only hope this is bad information.
This is just awful.
This is just horrible. (phriendlyjaime - 4/16/2007 12:37:50 PM)
What the hell is going on? Any ideas on the shooters? And WHY?
Some cocksucker looking for his girlfriend (DanG - 4/16/2007 1:01:46 PM)
I've heard that this son-of-a-bitch shot up my god-damned school because he was looking for his fucking girlfriend who broke up with him. I hope this fucker burns in Hell.
I've been crying for about a half-hour now.
An Bush's Press Conference turned to Iraq and blaming Democrats after just saying "His prayers are with them." Fuck you, Mr. President.
Yes - I've heard the same thing. (Rob - 4/16/2007 1:06:44 PM)
Any explanation will be senseless garbage, to tell you the truth. But this one is pure 100% idiocy. Plain and simple.
Sorry for that (DanG - 4/16/2007 1:20:36 PM)
I know that was vulgar, but I'm scared, pissed, and confused all at the same time. This is Blacksburg...my home...I don't know.
Don't be sorry, honey. (phriendlyjaime - 4/16/2007 1:23:23 PM)
Emotional outbursts are more than understandable.
I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but I heard from a girl who has a friend that works near Tech that the fatalities are around 31, but are not being reported as of yet.
I never thought it could get worse than Columbine.
Clearly, I was way wrong.
a parent's worst nightmare too (PM - 4/16/2007 1:25:37 PM)
no need to apologize (Jambon - 4/16/2007 1:26:03 PM)
I can't even begin to imagine how you feel Dan.
Rumor is ... (Rob - 4/16/2007 12:57:37 PM)
- and this is JUST a rumor - that this is a ex-boyfriend situation. I'm sure we'll have real answers soon.
I think this goes without saying, but Gov. Kaine (Jambon - 4/16/2007 1:23:11 PM)
needs to return IMMEDIATELY from his trip to Asia:
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine leaves Sunday for a two-week excursion that will take him to Japan, Hong Kong and India in search of economic development prospects and trade partners for Virginia.
Anyone know if his office has released a statement?
Not yet (phriendlyjaime - 4/16/2007 1:24:42 PM)
But I am sure he will return. I imagine a press conference from the campus will include our Senators, our Governor, and most likely, the POTUS.
the CNN affiliate just said (Jambon - 4/16/2007 1:28:02 PM)
Kaine is being rerouted from Tokyo right now, but the trip takes about a day and a half so he won't get here till tomorrow afternoon.
RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine released the following statement regarding today's shootings at Virginia Tech:
"It is difficult to comprehend senseless violence on this scale.
"Our prayers are with the families and friends of these victims, and members of the extended Virginia Tech community.
"The state is working closely with Tech officials, local law enforcement, and the community health system to provide whatever additional resources and support may be needed.
"My staff has made arrangements for me to leave Tokyo today, where I was set to begin a two-week Asian trade mission, so that I can return to the Commonwealth on Tuesday.
"I urge Virginians to keep these victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers."

Donate Blood (Evan M - 4/16/2007 1:40:22 PM)
Over on Kos folks are urging people to donate blood. Given the scope of the tragedy, I think that's the best thing those of us in Virginia can do to help, besides giving our help and prayers to the Tech community.
My cousin was an engineering student.. (doctormatt06 - 4/16/2007 1:44:16 PM)
and he goes to tech, i must say...some divine providence gave him the idea to sleep in and skip class today and go home to Tech from Fredericksburg late today!!!
29 to 32 Dead (kevindruff - 4/16/2007 1:45:35 PM)
ABC News' Pierre Thomas (a VPI Alum) reports the dead at between 29 and 32.
I heard it too... (Rob - 4/16/2007 1:50:33 PM)
I'm looking for a link to update the diary. This is just horrible - mind numbing and so sad!

Death Toll Now 31 (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 2:28:48 PM)
Why I Couldn't Blog This & Tidbits (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:04:04 PM)
Though I live here, I was unable to blog this. I don't have words to describe this. I think everyone connected to Virginia Tech, and everyone living in Blacksburg is in shock. I don't have any ability to make any sense of it.
A few tidbits:
1) this one hits too close to home.
2) I've been working to feed info (from local TV) to my husband, who was stuck on campus (he was getting no info). He is now home safe and sound.
3) My husband got no info about the first shooting until after 10 AM. I informed my husband before he heard anything. I heard so many sirens that I got on the local TV website and immediately found that Tech had been "locked down" from the first shooting. As I was talking to my husband on the phone, he heard an emergency announcement (the first one he got) to stay in lock down and away from windows.
As things began to unfold, the Tech website became inaccessible. And then the news kept getting worse and worse. Additional casualties at Norris, a building I myself have had a doctoral class in in the past. (West AJ is the dorm our daughter once lived in some years ago).
One of the most frightening things is to realize that faculty and the half of students (those living off campus) should not have even been on campus at all because the initial event happened hours earlier. Not enough people got word about all of this.
4) Complicating things is that I lost my PC connection repeatedly due to high winds. I've also had a brownout today. I am not sure how long I'll have power because it keeps going off.
5) The August tragedy at first appeared to have spread to campus. Later on, we learned that the gunman back then never had been on campus. It was still a tragedy that affected us all. This time, however, the magnitude is so much worse.
Note: It now appears the gunman had considerable ammunition and more than one weapon. This was apparently planned. He apparently chained the exits to the building (Norris). This would explain why there have been reports that some students jumped out of windows in Norris earlier today.
A Memorial service will be in Cassel Coliseum at noon tomorrow. All classes are canceled tomorrow. Please pray for everyone affected by this.
More about the windstorm (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:27:00 PM)
Due to the windstorm (resulting from the Noreaster), helicopters could not land to evacuate victims. This weather-related complication is a terrible turn of events. We will never know if quicker evacuation might have saved any of the lives.
Tragedy upon tragedy (Alicia - 4/16/2007 3:52:29 PM)
that's how I feel about the winds and the medevac helicopters that could have gotten them to Roanoke or Charlotteville hospitals...
To you, To Dan, and to all with personal connections to this disaster, know that you are in the hearts and thoughts of many.
It's so awful there just isn't that much more a person can say.
Peace and strength to all.
Condolences to all from Blacksburg (Catzmaw - 4/17/2007 8:56:59 AM)
and Virginia Tech. This was a terrible and evil event. Kathy and Steve and Dan and all you folks with connections to Blacksburg - I don't know what to say. It reminds me of how angry and helpless I felt to see the smoke rising over Arlington the day the plane hit the Pentagon and the panicky worry about friends and the parents of my children who worked there. When something this big hits your town, the whole town feels the pain in a really personal way. You keep asking yourself how someone like this creep could decide to play God and take the lives of so many people for no good reason. Those poor kids and their parents and families and friends. It's too hard to think about.
The Parents (elevandoski - 4/16/2007 2:35:09 PM)
I'm praying most immediately for the parents of all VT students. What a horrifying panic they could be in right now if they have yet to hear from their son or daughter.
When I frst saw the news, (mkfox - 4/16/2007 2:40:51 PM)
I thought it was some guy with an assault rifle opening fire on a crowded classroom, but killing 30 people with two handguns on opposite ends of campus three hours apart is just unfathomable. Campus security and town police really didn't get something right. This is truly terrible.
(Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 4/16/2007 2:49:49 PM)
I graduated early from Virginia Tech this past December. By all means I should still be there. All of my friends are still there, and I know too many senior engineers who I can't get ahold of. I've been freaking out, crying, breaking down all morning trying to get ahold of everyone. I'm going back home to Blacksburg tonight because I can't be away from everyone. Please continue to pray for all of the dead, wounded, friends, families, students, everyone who will be scarred for years to cmoe and those who have been senselessly taken away.
Michael Sizemore
Virginia Tech Class of 2006
Michael - my prayers go out to you. (Rob - 4/16/2007 3:03:16 PM)
Please drive safely back to the Burg.
Prayers from Durham (DukieDem - 4/16/2007 3:11:55 PM)
I hope everyone's friends and family are ok.
Thanks, Dukie, Dem (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:16:25 PM)
We still have no info about who among our friends are among the victims.
Names? (DukieDem - 4/16/2007 3:21:04 PM)
Is there any indication when they'll release names?
Not anytime soon... (kevindruff - 4/16/2007 3:24:22 PM)
I would imagine
Not yet (names) (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:24:25 PM)
Of course, we are all waiting to learn this. At the press conference, we were told release of names is pending notification of next of kin.
And thanks to Rob (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:17:47 PM)
I blogged the August tragedy here at RK. This time I just couldn't. Thank you for covering this.
you're welcom... (Rob - 4/16/2007 3:24:53 PM)
I felt like it was the least I could do. :(
At least six victims are in surgery at this moment. (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 3:30:17 PM)
According to MSNBC, six of the inured are in surgery at two different hospitals (Lewis Gale and Montgomery Regional). Earlier Carillion Montgomery Hospital reported four injured, three stable and one critical. I am not sure about the status of that critical person.
Our hearts go out to you lady...... (Used2Bneutral - 4/16/2007 3:31:34 PM)
This mind numbing... when the lists of names comes out, the reality will really hit....... where I live, I actually heard the shots at the Sully Government center last year which is just through the trees behind my house.... the shock then from the two police officers being shot was immense.... But 32 dead and several more in bad shape... I can't even imagine the grief yet.....
Thoughts and prayers to all of you down there (Kathy Gerber - 4/16/2007 3:42:49 PM)
Be gentle with yourselves and know that we're thinking of you.

Statement of Senator Webb on the School Shootings at Virginia Tech
The following is a statement from Senator Jim Webb regarding the school shootings at Virginia Tech:
"I am truly saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech. My heart goes out to the parents and families of the victims of this senseless act. My office has been in communication with the Governor's office and officials at Virginia Tech to offer any assistance."
Also, the Webb office says that he and Senator Warner plan to head to Virginia Tech tomorrow...
So sorry. (Bernie Quigley - 4/16/2007 4:41:49 PM)
Feeling so bad for you all here in New Hampshire.
Beyond belief (Bubby - 4/16/2007 5:04:49 PM)
I never would have believed that I would turn on the TV and hear Blacksburg, and Virginia Tech described as site of The Worst School Shooting in American History, and the Worst Mass Murder in American History. Never in a million years.
Bubby, (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/16/2007 5:55:35 PM)
My thoughts too. It is unfathomable.
A parent's worst nightmare (cycle12 - 4/17/2007 7:09:29 AM)
My brother and I are Virginia Tech graduates, as is my oldest son, and my youngest son was a student there initially before later transferring and graduating from VMI.
Two weeks ago, on a bright, sunny, warm and peaceful spring day, I rode my motorcycle about 30 miles south of our home to visit the Tech campus once again, always a beautiful place to behold and experience.
As I sat on my bike on the narrow road which surrounds the Tech drill field, at a student crosswalk within view of Norris Hall waiting for the pedestrian traffic to clear, I reflected on the beauty of the campus and the quiet, friendly nature of its smiling, laughing, talking - always talking - students on the move to or from classes or other activities.
The Virginia Tech campus and environs have changed significantly since I graduated from there nearly 35 years ago, the student body has nearly doubled, but the students seemed to be just like those with whom I had attended that wonderful university all those years ago.
When my wife and I first sent our sons off to Virginia Tech nearly a decade ago, we had no concerns about their safety, and we were glad that in order for them to go to college, they were able to get away from home, but not too far away...
My heart and thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who were hurt or killed or otherwise affected by yesterday's incomprehensibly senseless tragedy, and especially to those parents who sent their children off to college, thinking that they would be safe and secure.
Yesterday's tragedy was truly a parent's worst nightmare, and it could happen anywhere, anytime.
I will visit Virginia Tech again, soon, and I'm sure it will be beautiful there, as always, but it will be forever different, too. On my next trip to Tech, I will appreciate the campus - and especially the students - even more.
Of the thousands of Virginia Tech students and professors and other staff members and support personnel, it now appears that one student was deeply troubled, became violent and inflicted himself on that previously tranquil community.
One person - that's all it takes to create an unthinkable nightmare.
