Devolites-Davis Runs to Left of Chap Petersen

So, it's come down to this for Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis (R-Fairfax), one of the most endangered Virginia Republicans this year - she's attempting to run TO THE LEFT of her opponent, Chap Petersen (D).  According to today's Washington Post, Mrs. Tom Davis (see photo of "moderate" Tom Davis with George Allen) is calling herself an "independent voice" who backs strong "gun-control" measures, as well as "adding sexual orientation to the state's nondiscrimination law."

Unfortunately for Devolites-Davis, this didn't work for Connie Morella (R) in "blue" Montgomery County a few years ago.  It didn't work for Lincoln Chafee (R) in "blue" Rhode Island last year.  And it's not going to work for her this year in "blue" Fairfax, which voted for Kaine, Byrne, Webb, etc., etc.  Besides, Devolites-Davis isn't as "moderate" as she claims to be.  Here are a few ratings on Mrs. Davis from Project Vote Smart:

*ZERO ratings from both NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia.

*ZERO from Americans United for Seperation of Church and State.

*ZERO, 25% and 29% ratings from gay rights group Equality Virginia the past three ratings.

*A 94% positive rating from the Family Foundation of Virginia, which is about as far to the right as you can get in this country (e.g., believes in defunding Planned Parenthood, opposes embryonic stem cell research, supports "fetal pain relief," believes in making divorce harder, opposes "Plan B" contraceptives, claims that gay-straight alliances in schools are "promoting risky sexual behavior in
our public schools," opposes domestic partner benefits and adoption by homosexuals, etc., etc.).

So, Jeannemarie Devolites-Davis is going to try over the next 7 months to do her best impersonation of a Democrat, even a liberal. But the voters of Fairfax are a lot smarter than that.  They know that Chap Petersen is the real Democrat in this race, and that we badly need Chap in Richmond so that radical, right-wing Republicans don't control the State Senate - and Congressional redistricting in 2011 - for years to come.  This contest is a "no-brainer" if there ever was one.  Go Chap!

You Forgot to Mention (Not Harry F. Byrd, Sr. - 4/12/2007 9:46:29 AM)
She (and/or Jay O'Brien) was the deciding vote against reporting the Equal Rights Amendment out of Committee for the first time in history in 2004:

The moderate that she is....

This is great news (Chris Guy - 4/12/2007 9:51:02 AM)
Why? Because it shows she's desperate.

This is what Chap will have to address during the campaign... (soccerdem - 4/12/2007 10:24:01 AM)

Oh boy... (Kryndis - 4/12/2007 10:35:52 AM)
Haha, while reading this I forgot where I was and thought I was at NLS instead of RK.  For the life of me I couldn't figure out why Family Foundation of Virginia was being highlighted in blue.  Obviously going to need another cup of coffee this morning.

As for the story, I'm actually a little worried about this.  The whole "I'm a moderate, ignore my record" shtick seems to work pretty well for her husband.  Hopefully she won't be able to pull it off as successfully as he does.

Blue is the default for hyperlinks (Lowell - 4/12/2007 10:44:36 AM)
Obviously, the Family Foundation is a "red" outfit...

Heh, I know (Kryndis - 4/12/2007 2:39:25 PM)
Just wasn't paying attention and didn't get enough sleep last night.

She'll lose GOP Votes (DanG - 4/12/2007 10:37:37 AM)
Democrats are voting for Democrats this year because we are pumped after Kaine and Webb.  That's not changing.  JMDD is making a mistake by not trying to rally what Republicans there are in Fairfax to her cause.  Visit NLS during a Chap-JMDD post, and you'll see that more and more Republicans are deciding to either not vote or back Chap in order to rid themselves of "a RINO."  JMDD is hoping to get a majority of Independents, but that may not enough for her the way Chap is cutting into her Republican base.

she is anti gun control (Alice Marshall - 4/12/2007 11:04:08 AM)
I will look up the details later but she voted in committee to Pass By Indefinitely (effectively killing legislation without a recorded vote) on a very moderate gun control measure. It was an issue in one of her races against George Lovelace. Will try to look up the details when I have a chance.

Devolites-Davis on Tysons Tunnel: Flip. Flop. (Lowell - 4/12/2007 11:07:40 AM)
January 2007:  "Devolites Davis discouraged tunnel supporters when she cut off the group's leader, Scott Monett, during a presentation he was making in Richmond."

February 2007: "At Saturday's rally, she drew cheers by saying she and other lawmakers would pressure Kaine to reconsider."

Flip. Flop.

Another view (novamiddleman - 4/12/2007 11:30:14 AM)
I'm thinking about writing my first RK diary after attending her kickoff Friday

This will be a very interesting race and I hope it will be more about ideas instead of attacks.  (So please keep it clean,  I don't have time to research all of Chap's not so great moments but I can post some of them if necessary)

Both Jeannemarie and Chap aren't your typcial represenatives of their respective parties which I personally find very refreshing.

I'll leave with this.  Take a hard look at Chap's voting record from his terms in the house of delegates, and keep an open mind about what candidate is the best choice for the district.

I'll do that, but can you please tell us... (Lowell - 4/12/2007 11:33:04 AM)
...how we'll be better off with a State Senate controlled by Cuccinelli Republicans rather than "get things done" Democrats?

One response (novamiddleman - 4/12/2007 11:58:39 AM)
I know your view is looking at the senate from the macro level and your goal is to regain a democratic majority.

Here is an alternate view from the micro level.

I look at it as 40 individual races.  The race between JMDD and CP should only be about who is going to represent the issues of this district the best.

Part of the fallacy of the two party system is instead of focusing on what is best for a district (micro) the focus is on being the majority (macro).  (P.S. I would argue the micro view is the more progressive)

If you have a problem with the more conservative members of a different district then find democrats who can be competitive (which inherently would be more conservative)

Hope this helped

Or, how about this one? (DanG - 4/12/2007 12:57:33 PM)
Why don't we screw that, and just decide that we're going to take back the Senate so you guys don't completely screw us over again when redistricting comes around?

That's what is at stake people.  Remember that.  Not only this district, but the political scene of all areas of the Commonwealth.

Agreed. This year is absolutely crucial... (Lowell - 4/12/2007 6:42:13 PM)
...because it will determine who controls Congressional redistricting in 2011.  That's reason #1, among numerous others, why Democrats need to take back the State Senate this year.

Chap is a moderate Democrat, pretty much (Lowell - 4/12/2007 6:43:40 PM)
...perfect for someone who calls himself "novamiddleman." :)

hey I'm still a middle person (novamiddleman - 4/12/2007 7:44:04 PM)
because I agree with the Republicans 66-75% and not 90%+

and there was a certain senate race where I voted for a certain someone too :-p

Chap is a conservative Democrat

gun control, gay rights, abortion, business, etc...

(don't believe me look up his record)

We should start playing a game pick an issue from both of their websites and try and guess who supports what.

It would be pretty hard

Assuming that's true... (Lowell - 4/12/2007 8:07:54 PM)
...I'll take the "D" any day of the week, given what the right wing would like to do on abortion, stem cells, environment, and many other issues.  I would point out that Chap is a VERY strong progressive on certain issues, like the estate tax.

What did they get done... (Greg Hoss - 4/12/2007 11:33:38 PM)
....other than sit in a corner whinning about no tax increases on the Transportation bill? Gov. Kaine didn't drastically reform that Transportation bill on Democratic lines but Republican ones. Even then, the so called "get things done" Democrats in the GA didn't vote for it. And Gov. Kaine is hardly a hero for signing it, it was either sign it or face backlash from the citizens of the Commonwealth for not delivering Transportation reform.

I gotta say I am amazed by some of the comments here. Is everyone here really not going to even look into the candidates stances and vote for someone strictly on the letter next to their name or because they want to turn Virginia "blue"? Am I the only one who finds this blue rhetoric kinda sad? Why don't the candidates have slogans for actual ideas instead? It just seems like there should be more substance to this Election than "Vote for us so we can redistrict/turn Virginia blue!". I vote on issues and results, not partisan rhetoric, maybe the candidates will come through with substance, but it just seems like a long wait...

As for this redistricting, its laughable. Davis and Wolf keep winning because their constituents keep voting them in but instead of trying to beat them on the issues, you'd rather redistrict them? Come on

What could be in his voting record that would cause Dems to.... (soccerdem - 4/12/2007 11:57:05 AM)
vote Republican, of all things?

Nothing (DanG - 4/12/2007 12:54:27 PM)
I usually respect the middleman's independence, but this is stretching.  Like I said above, Democrats are NOT voting for JMDD this year.  We want the majority in the Senate, and the only way we get that is by voting for the guy or gal with the (D) next to the name.

Don't buy middleman's logic.  If we want a shot at FAIR redistricting for the next decade, we have to take back the Senate this year.  We can do that, but only if we are united behind those Democrats in competetive races

Maybe not voting republican (Tom Joad (Kevin) - 4/12/2007 2:09:31 PM)
but maybe no vote at all based on this.

Stealth is the name of the game (Rebecca - 4/12/2007 3:39:45 PM)
These Republicans have been playing the stealth game for a long time. That is putting on a face which is acceptable to the public while planning to execute their real agenda later.

What could be more stealthy than wearing a tunnel botton after Tom was instrumental in making the tunnel a non-starter? It appears to the public that he and Jeannemarie support one position when in fact they supported the opposite behind the scenes. They both are playing the same game, bate and switch.
