Mark Warner: "I've Got the Bug"

Yesterday, guest lecturing to Larry Sabato's University of Virginia political science class, former Virginia Governor Mark Warner made it clear that he is very much still in politics. Warner says about himself, "I've got the bug," although "Whether that's Senate, governor, something else, I couldn't say at this point." It's ok, we've got time and are perfectly happy to wait on your decision. We're sure it will be the right one for yourself and for Virginia.
In the meantime, Warner is not planning to disappear into the woodwork. Quite the contrary, Warner promises "an unprecedented effort" to help Democrats win back the State Senate and gain seats in the House of Delegates this November. According to the Washington Post:
Warner, who had been considering a run for president, has more than $1 million in his federal Forward Together political action committee and $400,000 in his state political account, which he plans to use to help candidates for the House of Delegates and state Senate.
And, according to the Daily Progress, "He expects to spend a considerable sum from his campaign war chest to help Democratic candidates win legislative seats."
This is great news, of course, as much as Republicans claim not to be worried. In fact, as I recall, the last time we saw Mark Warner campaigning for another Democrat, Jim Webb was fighting to unseat George Allen. The rest, as they say, is history. But Mark Warner's certainly not history; he's got a bright future ahead of him, as do Virginia Democrats with Warner fighting for them. Thanks to Governor Warner and his "bug," I just got more optimistic about our chances this fall.

Excellent News! (Todd Smyth - 4/12/2007 7:51:22 AM)
he seemed (chiefsjen - 4/12/2007 12:25:40 PM)
as enthusiatic about running for something back in Dec when he had his small 'thank you' party for the draftmarkwarner.com PAC.
he's a star in my book and support him no matter what he decides to run for.
Great news, Lowell. Thank you. (Bernie Quigley - 4/12/2007 7:57:16 AM)
Saw him speak at a fundraiser for Chuck Caputo (PM - 4/12/2007 8:48:44 AM)
And he dazzled me. He spoke off the cuff, and I'm sure he was trodding on well known ground, but he also started having these extemporaneous thoughts and going off subject and he was brilliant in his analysis. No wonder he made a lot of money in business. And he has a big heart. What a combination in a person.
Iacocca on Bush (PM - 4/12/2007 9:12:13 AM)
Sorry for the off-topic, but the irrepressible Lee Iacocca had a few choice things to say about George Bush that I wanted to pass along:
We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car...I hardly recognize this country anymore...George Bush doesn't have common sense. He just has a lot of sound bites...he prides himself on being faith-based, not reality based. If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, I don't know what will.

Warner and Arnold & Green energy (Bernie Quigley - 4/12/2007 9:20:44 AM)
I heard Mark Warner speak up here last August to a small group in Littleton, NH, just before he dropped out. He made great points about environmental industry - green technologies being good environmental responsibility and good business as well. This week's cover of Newsweek features Arnold Schwarzenegger making the same points. Arnold gave a speech on green technology this week at George Washington (? I think it was - I saw it on C Span) making the exact same points and then some. The audience was crazy about him and I thought it was a great speech. Arnold and California is attractive in this, but Warner and Virginia should be advancing it; this should be his issue and the Democrats. I felt Warner was leading the way in this and on other issues which Arnold swagged.
Agree 100% (Lowell - 4/12/2007 9:31:06 AM)
Tim Kaine made a good start a couple days ago, Gerry Connolly's pushing ahead in Fairfax County. Now, we need to go beyond "cool counties" to a "Cool Commonwealth." Virginia should set the lead for the nation on global warming, along with Gov. Schwarznegger and others. This isn't just the morally right thing to do, it's a poltical winner, as Ah-nuld has demonstrated. So what the heck are we waiting for? Oh yeah, I almost forgot, we've got a bunch of flat-earth, screw-the-earth Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates. It's time to replace them with people like Chap Petersen, Janet Oleszek, Albert Pollard and Ralph Northam.
Y'all could go in with West Virginia . . . (Bernie Quigley - 4/12/2007 11:46:52 AM)
. . . and other Appalachian states which make up a "natural commonwealth" which we talked about here - We lived in West Virginia - Shephardstwon - when we were first married 20-some years ago and they had the worst educational systems in the country. Now I hear that they have the best because they are able to adapt to new ideas - bringing computers into the clasroom in the early grades. I think probably for the first time in our history we are going to start to compete regionally here in the U.S. - that is; other regions will compete with California which under Arnold's initiative and charisma, will lead the way into the new century. New England is too old school, post-industrial and worn out. You all have the advantage and pulling in NOrth Carolain and Tennessee could collectively in a five or six state regional vision go head on against California with new technologies and new agricultural practices - everything they do in the Central Valley above San Francisco could be done as well in the Virginia region.
Pressure on Senate run (drmontoya - 4/12/2007 11:12:53 AM)
Mounting, I can't see how he can't run for Senate with this bug and all.
As far as this year, not only does he have money in the bank, he can raise money that's also very important for this year's races in Virginia.
Let's not forget about the VP slot as well.. (sndeak - 4/12/2007 12:49:19 PM)
Warner is still at the top of everyone's short list for VP. Depending on how the 08 race shapes up after the mega super tuesday Feb 5th he will have to start making a decision about running for the Senate or waiting it out.
A VP Run? (AnonymousIsAWoman - 4/12/2007 8:30:17 PM)
I hope he ends up on the ticket because it would really put Virginia into play.
