David Englin Has a Primary Challenger

I just found out that David Englin has a primary challenger, some rich Alexandria attorney named Mark S. Allen. Apparently, Allen never voted in a Democratic primary, voted in the 2000 Republican primary, and has never been a member of the Alexandria Democratic Committee. Hmmmm.
Anyway, I have strongly supported David Englin since 2005, when I endorsed him and worked my butt off for him. Today, my faith has been completely validated, as David Englin has become one of Virginia's best young progressive leaders, fighting for the environment, education, health care, and all the issues I care about.
If you want to help David Englin right away, they have a volunteer night tomorrow night. Please email info@davidenglin.org, go to Englin's website, or call 703-549-3203.
By the way, this is not an official Raising Kaine endorsement. Having said that, I personally will do everything I can to make sure that David Englin is back in Richmond, working hard, next year and for years to come (if that's what David wants to do).
[UPDATE: According to the FEC, Allen gave to the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE (11/01/2000 250.00)]

Wrong Mark Allen (Greg Bouchillon - 4/9/2007 10:49:39 PM)
It appears he gave Jim Moran 500.00 bucks. His middle initial is S. not C. so that other guy appears to be the wrong one. So I guess he's not a republican plant, just a fucking moron.
No, I got it right. (Lowell - 4/9/2007 10:53:01 PM)

He gave to Harris? I don't like him already! (DanG - 4/10/2007 12:02:44 AM)
Crush this little punk between your fingers, David!
No one should primary David Englin (Sean Holihan - 4/10/2007 6:40:29 AM)
He serves his constituents and is one of the most productive legislators in the general assembly. Not only does he work feverishly to get his and other bills passed, he already knows how to work with the other side to get things done.
That being said, if I hear one more person say something about Harris Miller I'm going to freak out. Get over it. You know who else gave Miller money? Webb Chief of Staff Paul Reagan, Del. Brink, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille,
Sen. Howell, Sen. Puller, Ellen Qualls, Del. Scott, Del. Sickles, Margaret Vanderhye, Sen. Watts, and Sen. Whipple among many others.
Are all these people also terrible?
Me, Too! (K - 4/10/2007 8:16:53 AM)
And a lot of other good Democrats contributed to Miller. He lost the primary, and most of us went on to be enthusiastic Webb supporters.
So don't get cute and condemn any good Democrats for anything.
It was a joke, Sean (DanG - 4/10/2007 8:31:41 PM)
I can't really type sarcasm.
David Englin Has (MV Democrat - 4/10/2007 12:33:04 AM)
Been in the General Assembly only 2 years and has proven himself to be:
* One of the hardest working grassroots campaigners who reaches out to all portions of his districts at all times of the year
* One of the most dedicated and thoughtful progressives in the General Assembly
* A delegate who is attentive to all portions of the 45th District
* A voice a conscience on the Estate Tax, Religious Freedom, and individual rights in a party that has frequently abandoned its core principles for interest group ratings.
There is absolutely no reason for Dave Englin to be primaried. He's done his job and represented the 45th admirably.
I'm curious to hear exactly how Mr. Allen believes that Delegate Englin has not earned opportunity to be the Party's nominee in 2007.
This is as dumb as someone (Lowell - 4/10/2007 6:04:35 AM)
primarying Arlington County Treasurer
Frank O'Leary. It simply makes no sense.
Why? (KarenG - 4/11/2007 3:27:46 PM)
I approached Mr. Allen immediately after his announcement, told him I'm a resident of the 45th, and asked why he was running. He said that David was too partisan, that we needed someone in Richmond who could "speak the language" and get along with Republicans since the Republicans will remain in control for the foreseeable future. I told him that we Alexandrians expect nothing less of our "safe" Democratic reps than being staunch and vocal advocates of progressive Democratic policies. Another friend pointed out that David has an excellent record of getting bills passed, so he must be able to "get along" with Republicans.
I also asked him if there were any votes David cast in the past two years that he disagrees with. He said none that he knows of, that he doubts they have any substantive disagreements on the issues. He said it's more a matter of style, that he can get along with Republicans better, and he believes he is more qualified than David because he is mature, and is a businessman and attorney. He said there are a lot of questions about where David comes from and exactly what his job is. I took exception to his implication, and he lost interest in talking with me.
He has confidence that he can get along with Republicans in Richmond, but he can't deal with a Democratic voter in his own district. Nice. It's a shame that he is willing to divert resources on a primary with an outstanding young legislator when we need to be picking up seats down state. But, if he does run it will be fun to see if he develops some smarter answers to these inevitable questions.
Back Englin! (K - 4/10/2007 8:19:39 AM)
A blowout in the primary would only help solidify his reputation as one of the brightest young stars of the Democratic Party in Virginia ... and get him two years farther on the way to being a future leader in a modern Democratic Party that can take back and save this state from further Republican harm.
Agreed. (Lowell - 4/10/2007 8:25:31 AM)
We need to make sure that Englin wins overwhelmingly in this absurd primary. Again, Englin is one of the brightest, best young Progressive leaders in Virginia. He does a great job of representing his district. He should win in an overwhelming landslide.
Last Night's ADC Meeting (Matt H - 4/10/2007 1:00:36 PM)
As a member of the Alex. Dem. Comm., for the first time in my years as a member, last night's meeting was the first time I saw or heard of Mark Allen. A bunch of us (Union-lawyer types) in the back snickered when he noted his strong association with the chamber of commerce. I'm sure Allen is very good at researching property deeds and such, but his ability to actually stand up for the people is dubious.
Rest assured that Dave will prevail! In the past two years, Dave has distinguished himself as a true progressive in the mold of both Wellstone and Webb.
(Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 4/10/2007 4:50:16 PM)
So I guess this will be RK's first endorsement of 2007?
does it have to be a primary or can it be a caucas? (totallynext - 4/10/2007 6:13:23 PM)
What's the big deal (Soldier Democrat - 4/11/2007 1:43:20 PM)
What is the problem with Englin being involved in a primary? If he is the savior of the "progressive" democratic party than wouldn't a primary make him a better leader and public official? What has he done to deserve the right to go unchallenged? The beauty of a democracy is that anyone who thinks they have better ideas or can do a better job can run for office. Should everyone just sit back and wait for Englin to voluntarily give up his seat? Mark Allen is not a bad guy for wanting to have the debate of who would be better for the district. The fact that everyone is villifying him is exactly why most people hesitate to challenge someone, even when it is needed.
He may have donated to the RNC at one time but you should look at the fact that he has donated thousands of dollars to both Gov.'s Kaine and Warner. As well as recently to Barack Obama.
Correct but... (Matt H - 4/13/2007 1:29:48 PM)
It would be nice if the Allen could explain would he doesn't like about Dave's leadership and could explain what he'd do differently than Dave.
Obviously everyone is entitled to run for anything they'd like to run for, and competition helps all sides clarify the issues - in my opinion, Dave is in perfect synch with the issue in the 45 District, and I am confident (100%, in fact) that he will prevail.
