218 Votes to Bring the Troops Home

It doesn't get any closer than that. Just a little while ago, the US House of Representatives voted 218-212 (minimum required: 218 votes out of 435) for a resolution setting a timetable on withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq. Only two Republicans - Representative Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland and Walter Jones of North Carolina - voted for the bill, and President Bush promptly said he would veto it.
So, here's the bottom line: on November 7, the American people clearly said they wanted to end this war. Today, the House of Representatives, under Democratic leadership, responded to that and passed a serious resolution which would accomplish that goal. The Republicans, almost monolithically, ignored the overwhelming will of the American people and followed the party line. President Bush contemptuously said "screw you," American people.
After the flip is Rep. Jim Moran's statement on the resolution's passage. Rep. Moran has been a leader against the Iraq War, and deserves credit for helping pass this bill. Thanks.
"Today Congress voted to set a withdrawal date for our forces in Iraq and end this misguided mission.
"When President Bush was asked how long the war will last," he said: "We will be in Iraq as long as the Iraqi people want us there.'"
"By contrast this bill says that we will be in Iraq as long as the American people want us there. The American people realize this is a war not worthy of the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform who are bearing the whole cost of this war.
"In four years over 2,000 U.S. children have lost a parent in the Iraq. This bill is about saving more children from the pain of being told that their mom or dad isn't coming home.
"This bill will bring our troops home as soon and as safely as possible."

Bush-Rove are gleeful (Teddy - 3/23/2007 4:39:21 PM)
at this vote because they believe it gives Bush a club with which to pummel Democrats, i.e., the funding will run out so that the troops will not even have airplanes available to bring them home (yes, I've heard even this absurdity offered as proof the Democrats do not support the troops), the Democrats are defeatists, "the enemy" will use the announced deadline simply to wait out our departure and then come back in full force, the Democrats are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and so on.
How many Democrats jumped ship and voted against the Resolution? I am amazed Pelosi imposed enough discipline to get her 218 votes. I sincerely hope she is ready to counter the distortions and lies about the Resolution which will flood the airways.

Rick Boucher is a fine Congressman, and the 9th District is very luck to have him.
FIGHTIN' 9TH!!!
Framing Bush's veto of this bill (Jambon - 3/23/2007 8:16:45 PM)
Taylor Marsh
nails it:
Bush Set to Veto Troop Funds
..."The money for the troops is in the bill just passed in the House. If Bush doesn't sign it he's the one pulling the rug out from under the troops."
Now just think if all the Dems were using THAT FRAME as a talking point about this bill. Instead, the GOP still dominates the narrative which results in stories like this on Yahoo news:
Bush calls Democrats' Iraq timetable 'political theater'
Now maybe I'm nitpicking a bit too much considering Dubya is so low in the polls still. But I think we do ourselves a disservice by not reframing issues and bills.
Doing so would help change the public perception of Democrats being anti-troop. And most importantly, it would help in tarnishing the "Republican brand".
Exactly! (elevandoski - 3/23/2007 8:40:03 PM)
I heard on MSNBC when it broke this story about the vote today that the troops desperately need this money within the next 6 weeks. Six weeks!!! What happens if Bush vetos this? NOTHING!
This would have meant more... (Detcord - 3/23/2007 8:58:52 PM)
...if $23-30 BILLION in pork and bribes hadn't been needed to buy votes. What happened to the "different" government we were suppose to have? I would have preferred a clean bill and a strong message instead of a poorly crafted bill loaded with the stench of Congressional corruption that takes the focus away from what it was all about. So much for political spine.
For Bush to frame the Dems as cutting off money... (bladerunner - 3/23/2007 10:10:22 PM)
....for our troops is absurd. Just because we're trying to get the hell out of Iraq, and save our troops from needless dying in a place that really doesn't mean shit on the war on terror. Bush got us into this fucking mess, and we're not going to continue his fucking mistake. We are patriots for trying to get them out. We left Vietnam, and were okay now. Why waste more lives--just to make Bush feel big. And all this crap about Commander in Chief, well maybe we should go the way of the British, and get rid of the position of president--because we can't afford anymore dumb fucks like Bush. I'm out.
THIS is the best they could do?! (Dowd - 3/24/2007 9:15:22 AM)
Come on, our troops shouldn't be there another second, we should have defunded the war and then sent them to somewhere where they are really needed like Darfur!
Well, the way Congress works... (Lowell - 3/24/2007 9:28:45 AM)
...this is the best that Democrats could do. If they had gone for totally defunding the war, that wouldn't have had any chance of passing...probably wouldn't have gotten 50 votes. Would that have been better?
Darfur is another trap... (Detcord - 3/24/2007 8:18:47 PM)
...and a Muslim vs Christian setup that will bring every Jihadi on the continent in there if the US even hints at involvement. The EU and African Union need to police their own backyards and quit relying on American money and blood to bail their corrupt butts out of every problem.
