John Edwards will continue his presidential campaign despite the discovery of incurable bone cancer in his wife Elizabeth.

AP via MSNBC:

Former Sen. John Edwards today announced he will continue his Democratic presidential campaign even though his wife Elizabeth's cancer has returned.

This act renews my faith in humanity, the power of faith, and the largely forgotten power of love.  John Edwards continues to show himeself a man of undying virtue.  He is one of the greatest leaders of our time, and his wife is one of the most courageous and inspiring women of on the world stage today.

Much of the day was spent in speculation that John Edwards would suspend his campaign.  That speculation was incorrect.

`Campaign goes on,' Democratic hopeful says despite return of wife's cancer

WASHINGTON - The wife of Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has a recurrence of her cancer, but her husband's campaign for the presidency will go on, the candidate said Thursday.

"We are very optimistic about this," Edwards said. "Having been through some struggles in the past, we know the key is to keep your head up and keep moving."

"We feel incredibly optimistic. I do not expect my life to be significantly different," Elizabeth Edwards said.

The prospect of of a loss of John Edwards got me thinking today.  During this transformational political season the absence of Edwards would leave a leadership vacuum for progressive principles would simply have to be  filled.  Besides Edwards, who is standing up for the critical issues of Universal Opportunity and Working Families?  Who is taking the leadership on Energy Independence?  Who is striving to represent the overwhelming will of the American people on the foreign stage?

In terms of powerful, positive, progressive and populist leadership, there is no better candidate in the race than John Edwards.  Hillary is an outstanding politician and will make a magnificent president, but the policies she presents and espouses are progressive in neither word, nor content.  Barack Obama, while engaging and inspiring, has yet to espouse a message that will lead America in the progressive direction that it needs to go.

The absence of John Edwards would create an huge opportunity for Al Gore or Wes Clark to enter the race or would create an overt opportunity (it already exists) for Barack Obama to stand up for progressive values as he expands his message and action.

This is a very hard time for the Edwards family.  Our hopes and prayers go with them, and also our gratitude.  John Edwards has taken the strides necessary to lead and to bring the core values of Democracy into this election and to the White House itself.

I don't know how this is going to turn out.  One thing is for sure, I'm cancelling everything and brining my wife a dozen roses tonight.

Edwards only candidate with serious policy plans in place. (WillieStark - 3/22/2007 1:24:17 PM)
Edwards has been pushing out his policy plans and developing them to be able to hit the ground running if and when he takes office.

Check out the League of Conservation Voters press release on Edwards's energy plan. http://www.lcv.org/n...

I have always thought that John Edwards would make a great President and make no secret of my support for him. Today however, tears came to my eyes and my heart swelled as I gained a deeper understanding of just what his campaign is about. It is about people. Not democrat or republican, but people. Elizabeth spoke of meeting people who were going through hard times and didnt have the support that she enjoyed. She said the campaign was about them. Couldn't have put it better.

We need these two people in the White House.

Wait for the Coulters of the world to attack (DanG - 3/22/2007 1:31:41 PM)
Republican talking heads like Hannity and O'Reilly are going to be claiming that he cares more about being President than his wife's health.  You may be thinking that "No, that's too low even for them."  Just wait.  Those scum bags will find some way to try to turn this into a negative... and it will earn them a ticket straight to Hell.

btw, I love that picture (Josh - 3/22/2007 2:29:51 PM)
I did a search and ran into that out on the tubes... She's gotten more beautiful since.

republicans are traitors (pvogel - 3/22/2007 3:07:31 PM)
Thats right, I said it!!!!!!1

They should be  locked up and thrown away with all the other garbage.

Especially Limbaugh.

He claims that  Edwards planted the story with Politico.....  a traitorous blog if ever there was one, then  decided to continuw with the campaign.

Limbaugh should stick to saying he disagrees with liberal policy, and espouse his ideas.

These attack  libelous  things are lower than whalespit.

Sometimes I think they have the Himmler plaYBOOK, AND ARE WORKING FROM THE NAZI PLAYBOK.

I was impressed at the press conference with both John and Elizabeth Edwards.  They seem so comfortable and together with each other.  And she's terrific.  So calm and focused.

I used to think he was the beautiful one... n/t (Josh - 3/22/2007 3:23:33 PM)
