The Ferguson Campaign has gained statewide attention in recent weeks as Democrats place bets on regaining control of the General Assembly. Ferguson's 2005 bid was one of the closest in the Commonwealth with a difference of 1,265 votes. Ferguson won Franklin County which accounts for 75% of the District. The Ferguson campaign saw an average increase of 7 points in Democratic performance district wide.Following Ferguson's announcement in the 03/12/2007 Roanoke Times, Republican Delegate Allen Dudley announced his retirement, leaving the GOP without a clear candidate. While a GOP frontrunner has not emerged, the Republicans have set a date of May 12 to determine who their candidate will be.
With widespread name recognition, momentum from his 2005 bid, and six weeks of unopposed campaigning, Ferguson's lead is sure to increase. "I'm not worried who my opponent will be. I am not running to oppose anyone, I am running to restore common sense and accountability to Richmond," said Ferguson. "I've said before," he added, "I want to spend my time telling folks about my vision for Virginia and the Ninth District."
