Meet Rex Simmons (D - 40)

I am a Democratic candidate for Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from the 40th District, serving areas of southwestern Fairfax County surrounding Fairfax Station, Clifton, Centreville, and part of Fairfax.

The General Assembly works with the Governor to decide how to spend our state tax money and writes the state laws that we must follow. We should have a Delegate who can get results, keep our region prosperous, and improve our quality of life.

As a long time resident of this District and Fairfax County, I understand the issues that we all care about-traffic, public schools, environmental protection, health care, and public safety. My 32 years of government experience as an executive and auditor will help us be sure our money is wisely invested and that government agencies, like the Virginia Department of Transportation, are held accountable for how they perform. To learn more about me and where I stand on the issues, please visit my web site at www.rexsimmons.com.

Your ideas for making government work better are very important to me. Please take the time to send ideas to me at Rex@rexsimmons.com. Also, I am extending a special invitation to our young and future voters to become involved with my campaign.

I ask for your vote and support. We will have a primary election to choose the Democratic nominee on June 12, 2007, followed by the general election on November 6, 2007. If you elect me, I will work with Governor Tim Kaine so we can develop common sense solutions to our issues.

Rex Simmons
Virginia House of Delegates Candidate

Not to be rude (pitin - 3/14/2007 11:44:04 AM)
but what was the purpose of this post, it doesn't provide any information on where you stand on the issues, or why you deserve our support.

Also Rex, at the GMU Candidates forum, you said that 2/3 of the voters in the 40th don't identify with a party, this number seems a little bit exaggerated, I asked you then where you got this number and you weren't able to tell us, now that you have time, staff and resources around you, can you tell us where you got this number from?

In my view, there are three key metrics (Lowell - 3/14/2007 11:52:55 AM)
when considering a decision among Democratic candidates:

1) Where does Candidate X stand on the issues most important to you, the voter?
2) How strong a candidate do you believe Candidate X will be against the Republican in the race?
3) What type of job do you believe Candidate X will do if elected?

That's what I look forward to hearing from both Rex Simmons and Morris Meyer in coming months.  If that occurs, I believe we will end up with the strongest possible candidate to take on Tim Hugo.

I encourage both Morris and Rex come to Raising Kaine and "live blog," so that potential voters can judge for themselves on questions #1-#3.  Thanks.

Why is it (Glant - 3/15/2007 8:43:12 AM)
That when someone is going to be rude, they start out by saying "not to be rude, but?"

That was a simple introduction to the candidate with some background and a link to his website (www.rexsimmons.com) for more information.  Seems to me the purpose was obvious.

and Nate, do we really want to squabble over one statistic?  Or do we want to find a candidate who can fight Hugo and find a way to fund both our schools and our roads?

Sort of like when someone says, (Lowell - 3/15/2007 8:46:16 AM)
"To be honest with you" or "With all due respect," huh?

Rex has an excellent grasp of the issues... (SaveElmer - 3/14/2007 12:17:17 PM)
As they relate to Fairfax County residents. Not only does he understand them in an intellectual sense, but having lived in the county for so long knows how they affect people.

I have heard Rex speak on 3 occasions and was privileged to attend his kickoff celebration this past weekend...

I encourage anyone who wants to learn how he plans to conduct himself as a legislator to find the time to hear him speak and ask him questions...there will be plenty of opportunities between now and June...

A testament to the quality of his experience is evidenced by the fact that Rex has been endorsed by former George Mason President George Johnson, and former FDIC Inspector General Gaston Gianni...

Missed the kickoff (Teddy - 3/14/2007 12:31:21 PM)
because of an unexpected trip out of town on family business, although I had intended to be there, and I apologize. I have met Mr. Simmons and talked with him: his resume is impressive, he has a grasp of the issues that is informed by his experience, and is a strong Democrat so far as I can tell, so I will be making a contribution to his campaign (this does not preclude my making a contribution to his primary opponent, all in the interest of seeing that each has a reasonable opportunity to present their case).

As for the figure of 40 percent non-aligned, why not? We don't register by party in Virginia, and Northern Virginia has a reputation of having a high ratio of independents. That leaves 60 percent who probably do have some party loyalty on one side or the other, and we all know how adept Republicans are at targeting and getting their usual 30 percent to the polls while suppressing any non-right wing voting. Sounds about right to me overall.  I hope the new Democratic database is as good at sorting out voting patterns and cherry picking the Dems and Dem-leaning from the apathetic herd as repubs and Hugo have been in the past in their GOTV.

Teddy (pitin - 3/14/2007 12:47:43 PM)
You know I respect you, but I have to disagree.

Rex actually said that only 1/3 of the voters were party aligned, as in, 66% had no party affiliation.

I don't have the Voter file for the 40th, but I can tell you in every Virginia race I have worked in, we had a hell of a lot more party ID's than 1/3 of the voters.  I'm sure that just by booting up Target-D or The Van, these numbers would be proven false.  It concerns me that Rex is so cavalier in using false numbers and then not even being able to come with a source when questioned.
