America's Greatest Hypocrite: Newt Gingrich

Every time you think that Conservative hypocrisy can't sink any lower, one of their standard bearers shuffles down the Hairy Legs of Nicodemus to discover new hellfire with which to set decency aflame.

You won't believe this:  Gingrich's Affair During Clinton Probe.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged he was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.

"The honest answer is yes," Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson to be aired Friday, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

So, let's just get this straight...
Newt Gingrich, the guy who told his wife he was divorcing her while she was in a hospital bed recovering from cancer, was setting fire to the airwaves denouncing Bill Clinton's infidelity while he was gettin' busy cheating on his wife himself.

Quoth America's Greatest Hypocrite:

"There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them," he said in the interview. "I look back on those as periods of weakness and periods that I'm ... not proud of."

In the article, Newt goes on to argue the dozen ways he rationalized in his own mind why and how he was not and should not be considered a hypocrite.  Here's the thing, everything the right-wing did to destroy Bill Clinton they did for power, not for some high-minded ideals or protection of the common good.  They did it to gain, hold, and protect power for it's own sake and for their own purposes and pocketbooks.

It worked.  They had power, and for a dozen years they held it and suckled at the teet of corporo-socialism, but as with every devils deal their time came due.

The disaster here isn't that Newt was a liar, a tyrant, and a hypocrite.  The disaster here is that he and his cronies hijacked the reigns of power of the greatest nation in the history of the world.  The era of right-wing conservatism is over, and the sooner America returns to its inherent belief and protection of the middle class and the common good, the sooner we will be able to heal the grievous damage created by the scoundrels who have defiled American greatness.

Dear GOP, (Chris Guy - 3/9/2007 12:56:44 PM)
PLEASE nominate Newt Gingrich for Pres.!!

Glad to see this here. (phriendlyjaime - 3/9/2007 1:15:18 PM)
I put it up, and I was planning on cross posting.

So the same guy who has the same problem as Clinton is apparently saying that HE doesn't have a problem bc HE didn't commit perjury.

He has been silent on the Libby perjury.

He also did the UNTHINKABLE by cheating on his wife and then serving her divorce papers while she was IN THE HOSPITAL.

Republicans, thy name is hypocrisy.

McCain is also a hypocrite (PM - 3/10/2007 12:05:25 PM)
I'll reserve my "greatest" judgment for a little while.  McCain yesterday said he didn't want "gossip" to be a part of the 2008 process.  I think we know why.  Romney is behaving like a flapjack under the hands of a short order cook.

This is shaping up to be a fun campaign.

Show s Little Restraint (Drive-by - 3/9/2007 7:07:48 PM)
This is my first visit here, but I must admit that I am a bit disturbed by the tone of what proclaims itself to a "progessive" weblog.

I don't recall that Newt Gingrich ever lied about having, or not having an extra-marital affair. Yet you label him a "liar." To whom? His wife? No doubt.

But I recall that President Clinton lied under oath (and, please, of that there is no question) about his extra-marital affair, and yet the response was that it was a private matter unworthy of impeachment. I agreed, at the time. But did not a jury just convict one Mr. Libby of the same crime? Isn't justice supposed to be blind?

You also label Mr. Gingrich a "hypocrite" because he persued impeachment against President Clinton for lying under oath about Clinton's extra-marital affair while persuing his own. If I take your point correctly, then those that have engaged in the same underlying behavior as those they seek to impeach, whether or they have committed perjury in response to the underlying behavior, have no authority to judge whether the accused committed perjury.  Doesn't that mean that the Libby jurors would also have to be polled as to whether they ever lied...even once? It makes no sense to call someone a hypocrite unless he has publically professed one view and privately practiced another.  I don't see that hard evidence of that here, only inuendo.

As far as Mr. Gingrich being a "tyrant," isn't that a wee bit over the top?  What did Mr. Gingrich do as Speaker of the House that Ms. Pelosi hasn't attempted already in the same role? The Speaker holds a powerful political position and one has to use it as best he or she can while they've got the means to advance their parties objectives. That's not "tyrany," that's politics. Both the Republicans and the Democrats play the same game.

Do I like Newt Gingrich?  I don't know as I've never met the man. But I would think not.  Would I vote for him for President. Not a chance.

I guess that what I am saying is that those us who aren't ideologically bound to either party find the shrill rhetoric and hyperbole eminating from both wings to be unhelpful and off-putting. I voted for Kaine, and Warner before him, and I've met both men personally on a number of occasions. I have two "Warner in 2008" buttons in my desk drawer. But nothing I am reading here would make me want to sign up with you so-called Virginia "progressives." And I must admit that your casual aquaintance with political civility makes me wary of any candidate that might be endorsed on these pages.

Too bad, really. I was yours for the taking.

Let's See Now (norman swingvoter - 3/9/2007 9:24:48 PM)
"What did Mr. Gingrich do as Speaker of the House that Ms. Pelosi hasn't attempted already in the same role?"

I would say that Ms. Peolosi has been downright civil to bush.  On the other hand, gingrich and his neocons persecuted President Clinton nonstop, finally attempting to impeach him, an outrageous abuse of power in my opinion as an American.  Actually "tyrant" is rather kind to describe gingrich as.  I just use the word, "scumbag".

Hang on a second (Kryndis - 3/11/2007 1:53:18 AM)
You say that Clinton lied under oath and even condescendingly state "and, please, of that there is no question".  I have to disagree.  Yes, he was impeached under two charges, perjury and obstruction of justice.  However, he was convicted of neither.  He was acquitted by the US Senate.  See here if you don't believe me: http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/02/12/impeachment/

As far as the official legal record is concerned, Bill Clinton never lied under oath.  The fact that so many people steadfastly believe he did is an excellent example of how well the Republican propaganda works.

Of course, if you have an opposing opinion, that's fine.  Obviously you're free to your opinions.  However, in this case your opinion directly contradicts the decision of 55 US senators (including 10 Republicans), so to claim that "there is no question" he lied is rather arrogant.

Oh, I think I agree with Mr. Drive By that he should find another blog (PM - 3/9/2007 7:28:49 PM)

I, for one, like our occasional hysteria.

But he'll be sorry.  He'll miss our bi-monthly belching and farting contest.

Let me also say that No Newts Is Good Newts.

Where the hell is my free beer?  I'm pretty sure I was promised free beer if I joined this site.

CLINTON LIED UNDER OATH (ub40fan - 3/9/2007 7:45:38 PM)
Drive Bys point is solid. Bill Clinton lied boldly to Jim Lehrer  (my daily hero) .... and lied under  to a GRAND JURY. And let's not forget boys and girls that Bill Clinton sexually harassed some trailer park trash .... as Jimbo Carvelle would say.

You know white trash ... as in Redneck ... as in ... JIM WEBB's people??

Newt Gingrich is beginning the inoculation process for running for president by confessing his sins .... openly.

What out for this guy ..... and get off the Clinton Band wagon as both have far to many ugly skeleton's in the closet.

Who Is a Hero? (KathyinBlacksburg - 3/13/2007 8:33:17 AM)
Personally, I wouldn't lionize as hero one who purports to deliver unbiased news, but peddles it via a show produced by a right wing production company.  That's right.  Under the Newt, the right wing seized control of the News Hour production.  Conservative media mogul John C. Malone owns the production company, which also did other right-wing programming.

Gingrich, lying under oath? (Josh - 3/9/2007 9:28:50 PM)
Gingrich attacked his colleagues in the House on charges of ethical and financial improprieties while clawing his way to be elected Speaker of the House in 1994. From his powerful vantage, Newt became the center of his own investigation conducted by the strongly Republican Ethics Committee.

Gingrich had accepted a multimillion-dollar book advance from a Rupert Murdoch company while the media tycoon was an interested party to legislation pending in Congress. Gingrich also had a "nonprofit" project that solicited money to aid poor, urban children, but most of the donations were poured into Republican recruiting. For two years Gingrich denied that he had done anything wrong, then grudgingly admitted that he had given untrue information to the House ethics panel. Some people believe that giving untrue information to a House investigation is equivalent to lying under oath.

Gingrich claimed that his only failure was to have not consulted a tax lawyer. Two lawyers were on record as having warned the Congressman of liability six years earlier. In January 1997, Gingrich admitted his violations and agreed to a rebuke. He was penalized $300,000.

NEWT's a TOAD ... No Doubt (ub40fan - 3/9/2007 10:48:57 PM)
Man I love Josh,

He's all over Newt's case. Which is easy because the guy has more skeletons in his closet than Jeffery Dalhmer.

Yet my good friend .... two wrongs don't make a right. Bill Clinton, as President of the United States lied under oath. To me that's unforgivable. Have sex with all the interns you want ... just don't lie about it.

And here we have Newt Gingrich planning and executing his come back in steps. Look at Google news  today ... this cycle ... Jerry Falwell (Redneck POPE from SW Va) is already absolving Newt for being a hedonistic asshole. His confession of adultery is being forgiven.

Now here's the deal .... if you want Clinton baggage to push around pull for Hillary in the primary.

If you want a trial lawyer telling you what you want to hear .... John Edwards is there for ya. My brother the doctor ..... hates lawyers for good reason. He ain't voting for JE.

If you want a change .... if you want to win.... look closely at Obama.

From a resume standpoint I personally like Wes Clark .... but for excitment ... it's OBAMA all the way.

Sorry to lay it out like that .... but the Democratic Party needs to get away from Clinton .... and needs to get away from last cycle's losing ticket ... Kerry / Edwards.

OBAMA has got the lead ..... but he's got to do his homework ... if he does there will be a new day in politics and the people will be well served.

Love ya Josh,

TM

Falwell endorses Gingrich (martha - 3/10/2007 7:35:08 AM)
The former racist minister endorses the philandering Gingrich.

Sounds planned (PM - 3/10/2007 11:54:51 AM)
Gingrich knew this would come out so he issues his apology and then does the forgiveness thing, and Falwell welcomes him with open pocketbooks, er arms.

A ploy used by the religious right on many an occasion.  Thinks Jim Bakker through Ted Haggard.

Bwa-hahahahaha Just read Wikipedia on Gingrich's affairs (PM - 3/10/2007 11:59:55 AM)
In 1962, Gingrich married, Jackie Battley, with whom he had two daughters. Anne Manning had an affair with Gingrich in 1977. She stated in a 1995 Vanity Fair article, "We had oral sex. He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, 'I never slept with her.'"

If that is true, isn't that EXACTLY what Clinton said?

Bwa-hahahahaha

and more ---

He divorced Jackie Battley in 1980, serving her with divorce papers and forcing her to negotiate the terms of their divorce settlement while she was in the hospital after cancer surgery. He refused to pay alimony and child support.***Gingrich married Marianne Ginther in late 1981*** divorced in 1999, reportedly because of Marianne's dislike of Washington and Gingrich's time away from home. Marianne was quoted in a 1996 article in Vanity Fair, stating "I don't want him to be president and I don't think he should be."[citation needed] *** Newt later married Callista Bisek, a House aide 23 years his junior.***

Sounds like a porn again Christian.
