Edwards and Webb - Populism in Washington

I received a press release from the Edwards campaign today. It praises Jim Webb's brave stand against the Bush Administration's Iran power grab (full text below the fold). It struck me as critically important beyond its face value.
Webb is in the Senate doing what we sent him there to do: He's providing leadership. The Bush Administration appears to believe that Congress has authorized a war with Iran, and Webb is stepping up to specifically state the contrary.
That's leadership, and it's being recognized on both sides of the aisle.
That John Edwards would take the time out during his Presidential campaign to specifically praise Webb's leadership is worthy of pause and consideration. It identifies the quality of both Senators.
John Edwards here is shining the spotlight not only on one of the great military minds of our era, but also upon the new standard bearer of 21st century progressive populism. Edwards closely fits that same mold. So, while Webb has staked out his leadership on policy, foreign and domestic, Edwards is showing his understanding and praise for Webb's leadership in both areas as well.
A few weeks ago, I started considering the ramifications of a Clinton/Webb '08 ticket. In that post, I identified that it would mean 16 years of Democratic control of the White House with the economic policies transitioning from the triangulated policies of the DLC to the Populist policies of a Webb Presidency.
An Edwards/Webb '08 ticket would accelerate domestic policy back towards the most critical need in America today: re-dedication to the well-being of middle class Americans. An Edwards/Webb win would set up 16 years of a White House devoted to bread-and-butter Americans, which is precisely what we need right now.

EDWARDS PRAISES WEBB BILL REQUIRING CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORIZATION FOR MILITARY ACTION IN IRAN
Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Senator John Edwards released the following statement today praising Senator Jim Webb for introducing a bill this week which would prohibit the use of funds for military action in Iran without congressional approval.
The threat of a nuclear Iran is one of the greatest threats to world peace today, but we must deal with this threat by being smart. It's impossible to trust President Bush to do that - his reckless Iraq policy has created a chaotic situation in Iraq and damaged America+ó??s moral standing in the world.
Congress has the power to stop this President from taking our country down another disastrous course in Iran, and they should use it now. President Bush long ago exceeded his authority in Iraq and needs to return to Congress for new authority to manage the withdrawal of the U.S. military presence.
"He certainly has not been granted Congressional authority to pursue military action in Iran and Congress should put him on notice that he must request authorization before doing so.
+ó??I applaud Senator Webb for standing up to President Bush and introducing a bill that sets a clear standard and reflects the will of the American people.
"No President should ever take any option off the table, but instead of focusing on military action, we should focus on the many steps in front of us that have not been used -- negotiating directly with Iran, getting our European allies to join us in offering an economic package to assist Iran in meeting its energy needs peacefully, and isolating Iran+ó??s radical leader.
America used to be the light that the rest of the world looked up to in times of crisis. We must stop this stubborn pursuit of foreign policy based on ideology, and return America to its place of moral leadership.-¥

I haven't endorsed anyone... btw (Josh - 3/7/2007 6:06:51 PM)
I'd like to note that I haven't endorsed anyone at this point, and I'm sure that Webb hasn't endorsed anyone. I'm honestly waiting to hear from Gore and Clark.
US domestic policy needs to change.
It would make too much sense to us Democrats (WillieStark - 3/7/2007 9:33:51 PM)
An Edwards/Webb ticket would be unbeatable. Can you imagine an Edwards/Webb ticket going up against a Guiliani/Romney ticket?
Counting WV as a southern state(which in reality, it is), Edwards/Webb would win a minimum of 4 states in the South. Throw in OH and and you can even subtract PA and you're still talking about an ass whuppin'.
Personally, as much as I love him, I don't think even Jim Webb could make a difference with Hillary at the top of the ticket. She ain't gonna win a Southern state. With Hillary as the nominee, here we go again... That ridiculous 19 or 20 state strategy.
Not ready (Hoss - 3/7/2007 11:31:40 PM)
As much as I love him Jim Webb is not ready to run for another office. Senator Edwards was not ready in the last election and I doubt he's somehow become more qualified now. Senator Webb needs at least one, if not two terms of service as a Senator before the Nation would be ready to consider him for President or VP. Let Webb be Webb.
Webb can handle whatever is thrown at him. He is a MARINE. (WillieStark - 3/7/2007 11:52:21 PM)
I would think that Webb's service in Vietnam, Stint as Secretary of the Navy and other experiences more than qualify him to be President much less VP. Lets remember that GWB had very little experience when he became Prez. I know that is a pretty low standard but still.
Webb, as a novice Senator has already shown more statesmanship and skill as a policymaker than most two term Senators. I think you are right to say let Webb be Webb. It is not outside his experience or capabilities at all to handle VP duties.
And Edwards is FAR more qualified than you give him credit for. He was ready in 04 and he is more than ready now.
ready or not (Hoss - 3/8/2007 6:22:51 PM)
I think Senator Webb is possibly Presidential material, but the public will rightfully demand a history of elected service to judge him by before giving him fair consideration as a P or VP. Mr. Webb has a very full plate of Senatorial duties to take care of for now. Let's just let him get on with the job he was elected to do. We need him where he is more than as the VP!
I simple disagree about Mr. Edwards I don't see enough qualifications in his resume to support him for President. But I am willing to listen.
What do you thin of a Gore/Webb ticket
I can't make a decision until Gore is in this. (Josh - 3/8/2007 10:49:44 PM)
It's too soon to say, but Gore/Webb trounces any duo the Gerrymandered Old Party can field.
No -- we need him in the Senate (beachmom - 3/7/2007 11:53:32 PM)
Look -- as important as the presidential campaign is, keeping Congress Democratic and hopefully expanding our majority in the Senate is equally important. As you know, it was a very tough race that Webb won (and that's even when his opponent made a horrible gaffe), and very close. We need Webb to stay in the Senate -- he is a great voice for our values, and we need those kinds of voices in the Senate.
also on that note.... (presidentialman - 3/8/2007 12:23:03 AM)
Say we nominate Webb for Vice President, and I'm not in favor of this because the VP office is still lower and subordinate to the Presidency, but say we nominate Webb for VP, and he wins because the party ticket did well, who would you put in his place? And I'm not suggesting that others elected in both chambers in the class of 06 aren't as populist but in the Senate he's sort of a diamond in the rough. Of course there's Obama but his books, his campaign, he comes across veering on the edge of leadership and politics as usual showboating for the audience. Yes he made a great keynote speech, but that was one speech. Which comes back to the idea that Webb is the only populist Senator in office. Which means if Webb gets killed, resigns or somewhere along that nature of opening up the seat, who'll replace him. And I think if the pro Webb for VP want to go all the way, then the responsibility should also come with finding his replacement.
Plus, there's control of the Senate at stake here and if we go with you, just remember netroots arch enemy Joe Lieberman will win, so either way you're going to lose and you'll take the state and country with you. Do you really want that? Or do you want to expand the base we've got that we made with toil and tears?
Replace with Mark Warner or Tim Kaine (WillieStark - 3/8/2007 9:43:15 AM)
There are also a lot more good Dems in this state who would do well in the Senate. Mark Warner has even ran for that seat before. Creigh Deeds did well running for statewide office as well.
All of these individuals would make good Senators.
What about plan B? (presidentialman - 3/8/2007 3:29:26 PM)
What has Tim Kaine accomplished? I get the impression that this board is all eager to oust the Republicans blocking Kaine's programs so that Kaine will succeed. Now if you say I'm partially right, give me things that have sailed through in Richmond that Kaine has sponsered and signed.
Also, to my knowledge Craigh Deeds LOST. He may've come close but he didn't get his cigar.
That leaves Warner and what if backs out? Who are you going to put in Webb's place if Plan A,these three, fails?
Silly troll (WillieStark - 3/8/2007 3:46:13 PM)
Concerning Willie Stark's Troll (Lee Diamond - 3/9/2007 1:20:32 AM)
C'mon Willie boy, buck up. This is nothing. The person is just asking some questions. Breathe a little.
That's right... CLEAR!!!! (presidentialman - 3/9/2007 2:45:29 AM)
Your not going to die on us just because of a little questioning....CLEAR!!!...CLEAR!!!....by little ol me.
Presidential Candidates - Two Stand Out (Lee Diamond - 3/9/2007 1:25:10 AM)
I have not jumped yet either, but I suggest taking a look at the resumes, the political skills and the accumulated knowledge of the respective candidates.
Obama and Richardson are way ahead of the rest of them. If you want authentic, qualified, skilled politicians in one package I think that you have to go with Richardson or Obama. Alternatively, we can all go to Nashville and kidnap Al Gore and put him on the campaign trail.
Kidnap Al Gore (Josh - 3/9/2007 12:09:43 PM)
Who needs a "draft" when you can just Shanghai the guy?
Josh (phriendlyjaime - 3/9/2007 12:28:55 PM)
when and where do you want to meet for the above described shennanigans? ;)
Josh & PJ.....Rally Outside Al's House (Lee Diamond - 3/9/2007 4:10:12 PM)
This was my idea, so don't forget who your friends are. Nashville is a fun place. We could have a good time.
