Tomorrow (Wednesday, 3/7), the RK/NLS Virginia Politics show is extremely honored to have Senator Jim Webb on as our very special guest!  Senator Webb will be live at 1:30 PM, and we'll start the show at 1:15 PM.

Ben and I most likely won't take calls while Jim Webb is on the air, since we only have 15 minutes of his time.  However, you can call in afterwards at
(646) 652-2679.  Thanks, and please spread the word about this!

P.S.  Any particular questions you'd like us to ask?

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 11:57:52 AM)
Awesome, that is so exciting!

Yes, ask him how he can get away with being brand new to this and STILL one of the 3 people who can actually shut down Chris Matthews.

Word! (Catzmaw - 3/6/2007 12:28:21 PM)

I would really like to hear what Senator Webb has to say (Catzmaw - 3/6/2007 12:35:13 PM)
about the problems at Walter Reed and other hospitals - particular, what is his take on the privatization boondoggle?

I would also like to hear his take on what would happen to this teetering system if we got ourselves into war with Iran and had even more casualties going there.

Also (I'm being greedy, here, but you can pick or choose) - could he weave the new GI Bill he proposed into a discussion of the types of assistance which can be offered to folks suffering from PTSD and career ending injuries?  I mean, I personally believe the certainty of having an education and a stipend while obtaining an education can go a long way toward alleviating the stress which can cause episodes of PTSD, and can also relieve stress on the families of these veterans, but is there some way that more job assistance and occupational therapy can be provided to our returning injured veterans?

He spoke about it on Hardball (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 1:26:35 PM)
last night.  Transcript and video will be available soon, I assume.

Excellent photo taken of Webb while delivering his response to Bush's SOTU address... (cycle12 - 3/6/2007 12:38:37 PM)
And an equally exciting opportunity, Lowell - thanks so much for putting this together!

Did he ever receive an answer from Rice regarding the administrations position on the authority to invade Iran under the Iraq war resolution?

Not a clear one, as far as I know (Lowell - 3/6/2007 1:18:48 PM)

Anything new in the Webb-GI Bill (Hoss - 3/6/2007 2:37:03 PM)
Senator Webb often describes the new GI Bill as areturn to the old GI Bill of the Post World War II era.  I am wondering if he is adding any new aspects to the bill. If so, what are they?

As a potentially qualified OIF veteran I have an idea.  Could he consider giving me the option of transferring my benefit to one or more of my children (or spouse)?  The return to the government would be even greater than if I used the benefit for myself and many veterans would probably embrace the idea.  I'm sure my WWII, Korea, Vietnam veteran father would have loved to have had that option.

Thanks

I was actually going to suggest that the benefit (Catzmaw - 3/6/2007 2:49:16 PM)
be transferable for the spouses, parents, or dependents of seriously injured vets who may not be able to utilize it fully for themselves.

Webb Questions (leftofcenter - 3/6/2007 3:06:20 PM)
I know this site is a Jim Webb love fest, but someone MAY want to ask him why he doesn't talk about IraQ anymore. I find it pretty outrageous considering he RAN on this issue during his campaign. Seems Senator Webb has moved on to IraN these days. I'd hate to see him fall in line with the Blue Dogs but it appears that's what has happened.

Oh, and he may want to work up a BIT more outrage on national television about the conditions at Walter Reed.-considering he's a vet and all. Oh, and a Democrat, oh and on several committees that could actually HELP the vets.

OH, and you should work on (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 3:12:11 PM)
giving yourself a username that tells the TRUTH about your political leanings.  Gimme a break, please.

Webb (leftofcenter - 3/6/2007 3:29:35 PM)
30 year Democrat here thanks. I am just under the probably misguided perception that folks that we elect should probably do or at least try to do what we ELECTED them to do and not use the issue to get into office.
I like Webb. I just expect him to stand up now as he did when he was first elected.

Well, I don't know how you can say that. (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 3:38:25 PM)
Every time I see him on C-Span doing his job, he is talking about Iraq.  Plus, Iraq and Iran ARE the same issue at this point.

Iran and Iraq are part of the same issue. (thegools - 3/6/2007 3:28:06 PM)
I don't hear any great shift in his focus.  He was talking about finding a diplomatic solutions fro Iraq (including Iran) way back.  What has changed is Bush's saber rattling vis a vis Iran since the last election.  Webb must address that or he is failing us.

Thank god Webb is not Static, but canrespond to issues as they evolve.

You can't be serious - you really want Webb to be a (Catzmaw - 3/6/2007 5:05:11 PM)
one note orchestra, speaking of Iraq and only Iraq to the exclusion even of addressing the possibility that this Administration may decide to widen the war by invading Iran?  You really think talking about Iran somehow weakens his position on Iraq?  He has always said the Iraq situation is regional and not confined to one country.  How could he ignore Bush's saber rattling on Iran and still remain pure in his opposition to the Iraq war?  Advocating a regional solution means he MUST address all issues affecting our relationship with that region or lose credibility.

Please ask him to attend and speak at... (thegools - 3/6/2007 3:23:36 PM)
some free events (like he did pre-Nov 2006).

Lately, the only events that I have known of where regular people could see him speak were fundraisers where substantial admission was charged.  This is not exactly the best way to connect with the people he represents....although it is a great way to meet people with spare money.

I understand the nature of his life and business have changed.  The demands on Jim Webb, the under-funded candidate, and Jim Webb, the sitting-Senator, are very different.  However, part of his appeal came from the accessibilty of his former self.  I just hope that does not disappear (for regular people like me who don't have lots of spare money).

That said:  Thanks for the good work in the Senate.

I totally agree with this. (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 3:39:50 PM)
He is still very popular and has that rockstar appeal, and it would be great if more people (esp. outside of NOVA) could be a part of that.

Absolutely. I propose that he buy us all a beer. (Catzmaw - 3/6/2007 5:07:51 PM)

I second that. (phriendlyjaime - 3/6/2007 5:11:39 PM)
Sen. Webb, buy me beer.

If you get a chance (Eric - 3/6/2007 4:11:00 PM)
I'd love to hear Webb's response to a non-Iraq/Iran/Troops question.  Yeah, I know that was the centerpiece of his campaign.  But It'd be great to hear that he can handle more than one thing at a time and that Tom Davis was wrong in saying that Webb is a one issue senator.

How about something on his Clean Coal/Carbon Sequestration bill?  Does he believe that coal can be cleaned enough?  Is this just the first step and stronger environmental protection bills are on the way?  Does he have any plans to try to help Virginia become a leader in environmental issues?

Bin Laden, Zawhiri Reward (JPTERP - 3/6/2007 4:30:07 PM)
This one is a little bit out in left-field, but on March 1st I was listening to a portion of the Armed Services Committee meeting on Afghanistan.  During the meeting one of the Senators brought up the issue of Bin Laden's reward money (I believe the proposal was to increase the reward $1 million a month until Bin Laden is captured).

I'm not an expert, but from what I've read the Pashtun tribal areas along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border don't have electricity or running water.  These people lead incredibly simple, non-materialistic lives, and I have to wonder if $25 million USDs is really a meaningful incentive.  I would be curious to know if the U.S. has considered other incentives that do not involve paper money--e.g. livestock, 500 Toyota 4 wheel drive vehicles, 300 AK-47s--that might have a little more immediate relevance to the everyday lives of the tribesmen?  (e.g. an incentive that is more culturally specific than USDs).

I understand that the problem may fundamentally be that the guest/host relationship is highly valued in tribal cultures--and that will almost always trump any incentive that we give.  Still, I think there may be a fundamental problem with the type of incentive that we are offering.  I would be curious to know if these type of questions have been considered.

Senator Webb: Is impeachment truly off the table? (Bubby - 3/7/2007 12:39:12 PM)
Senator, do you believe that the many documented national security failures, policies, and usurpations of George Bush and Richard Cheney require a Congressional impeachment?  If not, under what circumstances, or evidence would you support such a course?  Is impeachment truly off the table?

My question to senator Webb would be: (NCgrassroots - 3/7/2007 1:02:20 PM)
Do he and General Clark still stay in touch? The reason I am asking this is because every time I hear either Senator Webb or General Clark speak of Iraq or Iran, and how to approach the problems in the Middle East, they seem to be totally in sync. They appear to be two gentlemen of a like mind, and it is these two people I trust the most on such matters.

It's a bit presumptuous on my part to put forth a question as I live in North Carolina. But I was an early supporter of his back in the primaries after Wes Clark endorsed him (being one of his many "small" financial donors). Also, I live in a neighboring state and I'm of "born-fighting" Scots-Irish descent. The last reason that I am daring to put forth a question to Senator Webb is because I have kind of adopted him as my surrogate Senator; since my two actual Senators are kind of dudds in whom I have lost all faith.
