Do Democrats Want to Win?

Can we just cut to the chase and put John McCain or Mitt Romney in the White House tomorrow? The GOP candidates running for President have zero integrity and their personal lives are a mess, yet they've remained relatively civil with one another. Smart Republicans know that even trashing George W. Bush, low approval ratings and all, are a mistake. By doing that, they're destroying the Republican brand. Heck even if the GOP primary race was as ugly as ours, they'd have an excuse because of the inferiority of their slate of candidates compared to the Dems. Polls have clearly shown that Republicans are not as happy with their choices for President as Democrats are. But we get stuff like this:

This ad, from Obama supporters not affiliated with the campaign itself, is from an Apple Computer ad from the '84 Super Bowl. And as much as I like Obama, somebody needs to tell them that he has the same type of overly-cautious, focus group-obsessed Washington insider types running his operation that Hillary Clinton does. Amazing that Democrats wanting to take back the White House see other Democrats as their prime obstacle. Think about how great it would be to put that type of energy into attacking the pathetic group of GOP hopefuls this far out from Election Day. Do you know how easy it would be to brand Giuliani as the sleazy jerk that he is instead of this "America's Mayor" crap we've had to endure? But we're too bust calling Biden a racist, Hillary an "opportunist" (aka politician), or portraying Edwards as NC's answer to Donald Trump.

I couldn't agree more. (Lowell - 3/5/2007 10:53:37 PM)
Democrats need to stop this crap and turn their circular firing squad on Romney, Giuliani, McCain, Gingrich, etc.

What offends me (Chris Guy - 3/5/2007 10:56:20 PM)
is that they couldn't come up with an Orwell ad this good when George W. Bush was running for re-election. But Hillary Clinton for President? Bang, here it is...

Preach it, brother! (Lowell - 3/5/2007 11:19:01 PM)
n/t

Amen to you both. (thegools - 3/6/2007 4:36:45 PM)

Is this really Obama? (Andrea Chamblee - 3/5/2007 11:01:39 PM)
I don't see it on his website. I can only hope this is outsider direty tricks rather than dirty tricks we do to ourselves.

Dammit, the only answer any Democrat needs to give about an opponent is that "I look forward to considering so many quality candidates to share my ticket as VP!"

Yep -- look at the Obama logo on the woman's T-shirt (Kindler - 3/5/2007 11:15:45 PM)

I saw the logo (Andrea Chamblee - 3/5/2007 11:21:42 PM)
but I suppose that could be forged. Is it not on his website because he's testing the waters before he takes ownership, or because it's not his?  I realize it's probably not forged, but I am hoping it is.

As I said above (Chris Guy - 3/6/2007 1:09:11 AM)
It's from an Obama supporter, not the campaign itself.

Could we please go after Ann Coulter instead? (Kindler - 3/5/2007 11:23:33 PM)
Chris, you are right on target.  Clearly this is a very slick hit job, not done by amateurs.

I'd like to add that all of this fratricidal nonsense is distracting from the vital work of the newly-minted Congress.  Politics is about earning the right to govern --so now that we've won the right by gaining Congress, would it not be a good idea for Democrats to spend a little time governing?  I mean, if we want voters to actually support us two elections in a row?

Chris - (Rob - 3/5/2007 11:34:58 PM)
I understand your annoyance at the supporters that did this video, but it's a bit of a stretch to blame Obama himself for  this.

This video would not have gone anywhere without Obama's okay (Andrea Chamblee - 3/5/2007 11:37:28 PM)
If it's his campaign, I blame him. Where's that upbeat campaign we were promised? Besides, she has millions more than he does. He needs her even if he heads the ticket.

This ad is something the Rethugs could run after the primary. We've done their work for them.

Obama's okay? (KCinDC - 3/6/2007 12:08:42 AM)
How exactly do you think Obama could have stopped an online video campaign? Once it was out there, it of course spread all over the Web within hours. Is he supposed to put up a speech on his site denouncing the ad and calling for people to stop spreading it? Maybe, if you want to ensure as many people as possible will see the thing.

Candidates can't be held responsible for everything every one of their supporters does.

If it's his campaign staff, he's responsible (Andrea Chamblee - 3/6/2007 12:40:20 PM)
We can't hold W for everything Rumsfeld and Cheney does if we're not willing to hold Obama responsible for his own campaign staff. Also, if he lets his staff go for the Democratic jugular and the lead canddiate without looking at the video first, then he is irresponsible. If it's not his campaign, then he should dissassociate himself with it.

No, it's not from his staffers (sndeak - 3/6/2007 2:50:28 PM)
This is a supporter doing their own thing. I sent an email to someone within the Obama campaign and she responded that nobody in the campaign is supporting this clip. It was not done by them and they do not condone it. They asked YouTube about it and Youtube said they had no control over the content either.

They never called this person a supporter. my bad...n/t (sndeak - 3/6/2007 2:52:49 PM)

A stretch? It's f#cking insane (Todd Smyth - 3/6/2007 12:13:37 AM)
You people have completely lost it.  This is not even an Obama supporter, it's just an anti-Hilary peice of crap. People buy a vowel.

I didn't mean to imply blame (Chris Guy - 3/6/2007 1:10:26 AM)
to Obama. I don't think it's from his people.

THINK DIFFERENT (ub40fan - 3/5/2007 11:52:57 PM)
I think Lowell and Chris are wrong on this and should start thinking differently ..... THINK DIFFERENT  ala Draft James Webb.

This very clever ad challenges / demands that the Democratic Party should start thinking differently ... the Clintons - Hillary or otherwise .... been there done that.  Do you want to win or do you want to lose? The Republicans are just hoping they can run against Hillary.

Hillary (let's just drop the Clinton part) is powerful within party ranks, well financed and her people figure this should be their nomination / coronation.

Well fine .... just move along with the democrat-drones ... and nod yes to the droning message on the screen. Nice words but do they really motivate?

The new direction, the new talent is this kid Obama .... he EXCITES people while Hillary Polarizes ... If Obama gets the nomination and picks the right VP running mate .... The Democrats will have good chance of winning because Obama is NEW and hopeful.

Hillary is like Harris Miller - nice, smart and sure to lose against a popular republican.

Great commercial ripoff .... now if they could only make one where Ann Coulter is burned at the stake .... by Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell .... that would be cool .... that would be a much better use of time.

If you think Hillary is a loser (Chris Guy - 3/6/2007 1:19:41 AM)
then don't vote for her! Calling someone unelectable, and then assisting in her demonization, means YOU are part of the reason she's unelectable. Oy!

Ya know, you can like Obama and not hate Hillary Clinton. It's possible. Hillary Clinton is the second choice of a lot of Democrats.

Also, Hillary Clinton is not as polarizing as Bush was in '04. And if I'm not mistaken, he won.

I would oppose this if a Hillary supporter (Lowell - 3/6/2007 6:26:19 AM)
did it to Obama, Edwards, Richardson, Obama, whoever.  My point is that we should be going after the Republicans, not after each other in a bout of self-destructive, fratricidal insanity.

we are better than this (ASpotsyDem - 3/6/2007 12:13:35 AM)
This type of ad is beneath Obama.  He and we are better than that.  Let's stop spreading the sleaze and work toward winning in 2008. There is too much at stake to self-destruct.

You people are nuts (Todd Smyth - 3/6/2007 12:15:52 AM)
I can not believe anyone is stupid enough to believe that anyone who even supports Obama had anything to do with this.

I doubt the Obama campaign greenlit this (Chris Guy - 3/6/2007 1:21:12 AM)
But a lot of people love it. Matt Stoller on MyDD is singing its praises.

Saying people are "nuts" is not making an argument (Lowell - 3/6/2007 6:27:17 AM)
Please make your argument without resort to ad hominem attacks. Thank you.

Do Democrats want to win? (MohawkOV1D - 3/6/2007 1:03:50 AM)
Of course not!

Otherwise, we would have sent a clear message - anyone but Hillary, or Obama.

Neither one will be elected.  This is going to be a looong two year nightmare (a continuation of the 12 year nightmare we are already in) that is going to end in a democratic defeat.

My bet is on Ghoulianni as McCaine has lost his mind.

Just reading the cards...

Give Us Your Suggestion (Lee Diamond - 3/6/2007 4:57:44 AM)
Personally, I like Obama, Richardson and (drum roll please) Al Save the Earth Gore.  I think it makes sense to save the planet.  Too many Republicans are like Bush.  They don't care what happens to their bodies after they won't need them any longer.  They are only concerned about their souls which don't have to worry about floods and all that other earthly stuff.

I don't expect Gore to run.  I think that Wes Clark is probably kidding himself about the timing question.

What do we do?  I am probably going with Obama, but I won't decide for a few weeks.  I'd love to see Gore-Obama.

Bush and Republicanism are such failures that it seems reasonable that we could score a decisive win with the right team.  Not Clinton or Edwards IMHO.  Biden needs a makeover to  reduce the mounds of verbiage from his mouth's cup runneth over.

From an Obama supporter (sndeak - 3/6/2007 9:37:21 AM)
I've never been a big fan of Hillary but this is over the line.

I certainly don't appreciate this kind of garbage. I will do what I can to notify the Obama campaign to not only distance themselves from this but to reach out to his supporters and let them know that this is not how the campaign will be run. I'll also try to contact the creator of this to let them know that this is type of campaigning does more damage than good.

The use of Obama's real website is a real issue for me.

It's not much but if all of us make the same commitments to our candidates it will be a much more productive campaign season.

Sadly, the production is very good. If only it had been used in a more productive manner.

On the flip side, I hate it when republicans meddle in our primary so I am not a big fan of getting in the middle of their selection process. We have at least 4 candidates that should be able to beat whoever they select.

Has Anybody Asked Obama (Teddy - 3/6/2007 9:46:55 AM)
about this despicable video?

It looks to me more like a clever republican-financed effort to throw the apple of discord among Democrats--- fiendish but Rovian technique, don't you think?

This is where we should require an answer from Obama, and we should also insist Democratic contenders jointly and loudly condemn such tactics, and agree to that 11th commandment: thou shalt say or do nothing to malign thy fellow Democrat.

It could be produced by Republicans (Hugo Estrada - 3/6/2007 3:10:20 PM)
I believe that Teddy is correct: this may be a Republican-produced video. Let's review the evidence:

a) We already have a well documented case where conservative media were trying to get Obama and Clinton in a fight by attributing false allegations.

b) Although there are some editing geniuses out there, the production values of the video look professional.

It could have been made by a clueless supporter. But it is also possible that this is a Republican scam. In Virginia itself, didn't Republicans sent that bogus letter to Democrats where a fake progressive group endorsed Potts? Didn't they made the fake robo-calls in favor of Democrats to annoy people?

And who would win the most from a Obama-Clinton feud?

You could be right (Rebecca - 3/6/2007 3:54:11 PM)
Remember, Republicans were helping the Nader campaign. They also came out during the Democratic primary and knocked off Cynthia McKinney by voting for her opponent. This was permitted because it was an open primary. That's what happened the first time she was defeated.

Not McKinney again (sndeak - 3/6/2007 6:21:01 PM)
She had become an out of control loose cannon. Democrats down here were tired of here antics. Stop with the republican conspiracy in that race.

Why not do this to Bush? (Rebecca - 3/6/2007 3:50:43 PM)
This is the coward's way out. I'll tell you why no Democrat has made an ad like this about Bush. They are scared. They are just cowards. What kind of courage does it take to do this to a Democrat? This needs to be done to the Republicans! Jim Webb and Wes Clark seem to be the only two Democratic leaders who are not willing to pull punches with the Republicans.

If You Guys Really Want To Discuss The Ad........ (Lee Diamond - 3/6/2007 4:40:34 PM)
In a way, the ad is not fair.  She has been an excellent Senator for the state of New York.  I mean that and during the last campaign I blogged in support of her.

Having said that, imo the ad is powerful.  I kind of think it works.  I agree, however, that it does not work for Obama.  I would bet that Obama's campaign had nothing to do with it.  That is one thing that makes you think maybe a devious Republican did do it because no genuine Obama supporter in their right mind would tie Obama to that advertisement.  That would make them about as dumb as my hero George Allen.

I'll just say that to me Obama's air is fresh and Hillary's air is hot.
