My school in Enterprise Alabama hit by tornado - 8 dead

I spent my sophomore and junior years at Enterprise High School. Great memories there, and I know that school very well.
This is a typical rural town. Fort Rucker (Army helicopter flight school) is nearby, and the town doesn't have IMHO enough money for basic services. Most of the military members don't pay property taxes (because they don't usually buy homes) so the city gets less taxes, but still must support the military dependents/students.
The details are sketchy at this point in time, but obviously the newly built gym was not strong enough and students aren't safe from tornadoes. If they had enough funds, today's story may have been different.
We need more money for education, and school buildings should be strong enough to protect not only students but other residents from the elements. This should be the last place people are found dead, not the only place. Our priorities in this country are in the wrong place - way too much money goes into a forward deployed military while the homeland is being neglected.
Please do whatever you can to help rebuild a great little town.

I'm sorry for their loss (demnan - 3/2/2007 11:27:50 AM)
and I was thinking the same thing, the schools should be built to be shelters when these kinds of disasters hit.
Yet another reminder of how the homeland is being neglected (relawson - 3/2/2007 11:20:28 PM)
As if Katrina wasn't reminder enough. We need to do some serious spending on our infrastructure, but given the war of choice with Iraq, the war of necessity with Afghanistan, and our record trade and budget deficits, I don't know where the money will come from.
Bush did a fine job painting us into a corner.

We are on the ground in AL right now and will help until all is whole again.

Good to know people care enough to pitch in!
Interesting - are you an organization for this type of thing? (Catzmaw - 3/3/2007 5:51:27 PM)
Just curious about your name and what you do. Can you spare some time to give some details?
